Through shelter, we empower.
About us
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

In 1969, Beau and Emma became owners of the first home built by Koinonia Farm’s Partnership Housing Program, using the model that would become Habitat for Humanity. Their family moved into a concrete-block home with a modern kitchen, indoor bathroom and heating system, replacing the unpainted, uninsulated shack with no plumbing where they had previously lived. Pictured here, they celebrated paying off their home in 1989 with a ceremonial mortgage burning.

“We have to remind people how fundamental housing is to all of the other things they want. If you care about economic development, you have to care about housing. If you care about educational outcomes, you have to care about housing. If you care about health outcomes, you need housing.” Today in Brussels, our CEO Jonathan Reckford delivered the closing remarks at Urban Fragility and the Future of International Development, a hybrid event we co-organized with Cities Alliance. Earlier in the day he participated in a panel discussion about the connections between international development investments, social cohesion and global stability. Mathabo Makuta, the national director of Habitat for Humanity Zambia also participated in a panel exploring community-driven solutions for lasting urban change. Earlier this week, Habitat for Humanity Kenya hosted a special build honoring the legacy of President Carter. A team of volunteers from our Global Village program were joined by leaders from the United Nations, local government and other groups to lay the foundation for the future home of Rebecca and her family. Check out the great photos and learn more about the build. ⤵️
This week, we came together with our incredible partners to celebrate the extraordinary legacy of the late President Jimmy Carter, whose unwavering commitment to decent and low-cost housing inspired over 108,100 volunteers across 14 countries to build, renovate, and repair more than 4,390 homes—creating a lasting impact on communities worldwide. In honor of this legacy, Habitat for Humanity Kenya, led by National Director Margaret Mengo, joined Global Village volunteers from Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity, under CEO Matthew Flanigan, for a special Volunteer Build in Naibor Village, Laikipia County. We were honored to be joined by key leaders and partners, including: 🔹 H.E. Joshua Irungu Governor of Laikipia County 🔹 Hon. Chiggai Harriette, Presidential Advisor for Gender Office of the Women Rights Advisor to the President 🔹 Beryl Khanyile, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Country Director 🔹 Frank Ireri, Habitat for Humanity Kenya Board Chairperson 🔹 Jane Otieno, Habitat for Humanity Kenya Board Member 🔹Koome Kiragu, Habitat for Humanity Kenya Advisory board member and former Chairperson 🔹 Rudo Kayombo, Habitat for Humanity Africa Vice President 🔹 Daphney Ngoasheng, National Director, Habitat for Humanity South Africa 🔹 Elizabeth Njuguna, Risiih Investments 🔹 Joy Wachira, Reall 🔹 Maureen Viola, Co-operative Bank of Kenya 🔹 Volunteers from Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity, USA - Abigail Blake Together, we helped lay the foundation for Rebecca and her family’s new home, underscoring the urgent need for affordable and decent housing in Kenya. Rebecca, a 47-year-old widow, is raising seven dependents, including two abandoned grandchildren, in unsafe and deteriorating housing conditions. Struggling with food insecurity and relying on seasonal work, she faces daily uncertainty. This new home will restore her dignity, provide stability, and give her family a foundation for a brighter future. Inspired by President Carter’s legacy, we remain committed to empowering communities and addressing housing inequality. By mobilizing local and global volunteers, we continue to bridge the gap through fundraising and home-building initiatives for underserved families. Because housing is more than shelter, it is the bedrock for health, education, equality, and economic opportunity. #HomeEquals Rebecca’s family will soon move into a safe, decent home—but millions are still waiting. Have you volunteered with Habitat for Humanity yet? Join us in this mission to build hope, one home at a time. 📢 Stay tuned for inspiring stories from our volunteers and partners in the coming days. #JimmyCarterLegacy #BuildingHope #HabitatForHumanityKenya #HomeEquals #Volunteerism
