GREEN IS OUR COLOUR Halls Properties is a proud sponsor of the annual KLCBT Green Excellence Award (previously the KLCBT Sustainability Award). The Award recognises excellence in activities developed, planned and managed for the benefit of human society and environment sustainability. This is a good fit for Halls - we are unflinching in our support for the Greater Riverside Biodiversity Initiative and creating a thriving, future-fit green asset for Mbombela. The 2024 Award winner, SINRMAS, stood out for their river rehabilitation project in conjunction with the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA). The SINRMAS / IUCMA collaboration is an intersection of nine of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The initiative in a high-poverty setting, with a purposeful bias towards women, also combats water scarcity in rural communities and to date has cleared an estimated 50 000 tons of household and industrial waste from selected river streams and directly employed 45 people. WHAT IS SANTA SHOEBOX ALL ABOUT? We asked Lauren Renaud, Halls Group Company Secretary and our Santa Shoebox champion What is Santa Shoebox? Santa Shoebox is an annual initiative in South Africa and Namibia where shoeboxes filled with basic items and a few treats are packed, decorated and delivered to children in need. Name lists for each child are uploaded and on September 1st, the public can visit https://buff.ly/3UYye7c and pledge their shoeboxes. What happens then? The boxes are dropped off at designated sites and checked to ensure they contain all 8 new, age-appropriate items. What’s in the boxes? A facecloth, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, a sweet, school supplies, an item of clothing and a gift. When do the children receive their box? The facilities arrange a celebration date and the Halls team arranges delivery and attends the handing out of the Santa Shoeboxes. They spend time with the children, read stories and are treated to a song and dance performance by the children. I live in another country; how can I get involved? Anyone from anywhere can support the National Shoebox Project by pledging virtual boxes which are channelled to the areas most in need.
