Halo Invest is a strategic collaboration between EBS Advisory, a leading player in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) on a pan-African basis, and MitonOptimal, an eminent company in the asset management field. The company is 30% black-owned and holds a proud status as Level-2 BBBEE contributor. Internationally, over 3,700 studies have shown that positive Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance is a reliable proxy for quality of management. ESG is not only linked to protecting shareholder capital, but serves also as a leading indicator of financial out-performance in the medium term. We believe that this is especially true in Emerging Markets, and even more so in South Africa, given our current socio-economic challenges. In response, Halo Invest has developed - for the first time in South Africa - an ESG fund of JSE-listed equities that have been rated on how they are creating value for all their stakeholders. The Fund shows significant out-performance against the Capped SWIX. This is achieved through integrating ESG externalities in a quantified manner into our portfolio construction, both on a cross-sectoral and indexed basis, and for all counters on the JSE-ALSI. In so doing, we are demonstrating that shared value and shareholder value need not be mutually exclusive, and that good management practices will be rewarded over time.
