Today, 13 November 2024, I_Menstruate Movement will engage with the Portfolio Committees on Higher Education and Training, Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, as well as key education ministries, to highlight the urgent issue of period poverty within South Africa's education sector. This engagement will showcase our organisation’s groundbreaking work on menstrual health equity and present findings from our grassroots research report, "Bleeding in Silence: Barriers to Menstrual Hygiene among School Girls in South Africa." During this critical meeting, we will also introduce the proposed Menstrual Health Equity Bill (draft), which calls for free and universal access to menstrual products throughout South Africa. This draft bill, published on 12 November 2024, has already been shared with President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President Paul Mashatile , Minister of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga, and Deputy Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with disabilities Mmapaseka Steve Letsike The proposed legislation is a call to action, urging leaders to address the barriers millions face due to period poverty. Education and dignity should never be compromised because of one’s menstrual cycle. This session marks a vital opportunity for policymakers, stakeholders, and the South African public to join forces in driving forward a cause that stands to transform lives of millions of menstruators —especially learners—who have to experience menstruation without dignity in South Africa. Media statement: Dignity Stolen - Corruption Robs South Africa's Girls of Their Right to Menstrual Health The Gauteng dignity packs scandal is a painful reminder that corruption, greed, and brokenpromises continue to betray South Africa's children. The Sanitary Dignity Programme is intended to empower girls, protect their dignity, and ensure they could attend school without shame. Instead, it has become yet another example of government oficials abusing their positions, stealing from those who already have so little. We cannot, and we will not, stay silent. We demand a full investigation into how only 24% of 248 Gauteng schools received their share of R106 million dignity packs project. We demand Gauteng Office of the Premier Panyaza Lesufi release the full investigation report into the corruption within the project, with all those implicated facing consequences, including yourself, your predecessor, David Makura and Deputy Director General for the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Shoki Tshabalala. On #MandelaDay, we dedicated #67minutes at Ikusasa Comprehensive School to raise awareness about the politics of menstruation and highlight the pressing issue of period poverty in South African schools. While addressing 2,300 of their peers, Tsireledzo Makhitha and Tshegofatso Mabilane shared a story they heard during our Annual National Training from a young teacher who had to use her school socks as a menstrual product. This poignant example underscores the harsh reality faced by many learners who struggle with period poverty every month. Tshegofatso reiterated that it is an injustice for learners to miss school because of their periods, emphasizing the urgent need to fight against period poverty. During the event, we also donated 1,500 packs of menstrual pads from our crowdfunding campaign. We extend heartfelt thanks Trade Link Retail Systems and Womandla Foundation for generously topping up our donation and for their ongoing commitment to eradicating period poverty.
