Industrial engineers are responsible for the analysis, design, planning, implementation, operation, management and maintenance of integrated systems consisting of people, money, material, equipment, information and energy. Quite a mouthful! For that reason, a person with a degree in industrial engineering has a very wide choice in terms of work environment, type of employer or self-employment. Some of the fields of application of Industrial Engineering are as follows: 1. Logistics 2. Manufacturing 3. Analytics and Synthesis 4. Managment The Department of Industrial Engineering hosts two postgraduate study domains: Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management.In each study domain there are three different programmes, i.e. the Post Graduate Diploma in Engineering (PDE), the Masters in Engineering (MEng) and Philosophy Doctorate (PhD). The delivery of the MEng programme is split into two different models, i.e. Structured and Research. These options add up to eight different possible post graduate qualifications for students in a variety of research areas. This year my journey with the Stellenbosch University - Master's Degree in Engineering Management (MEM) concludes: I’ve recently submitted my research article and report on managing #innovation #projects to enhance #underground mining #operations. Now, it's a waiting game as the assessments come in. I embarked on the MEM programme at the end of 2021, applying on a whim after thoroughly enjoying the process of earning my #PMP certification. The MEM programme included two years of structured coursework in 2022 and 2023, two modules per semester, culminating with this year's major research project. Reflecting on the experience, I’m incredibly grateful for the programme. It not only introduced me to new areas of study and connected me with brilliant peers but also allowed me to refine my lifelong learning skills. It provided a structured approach to expanding the non-technical expertise I've gained throughout my professional career. The asynchronous, on-demand learning model, combined with the absence of traditional exams (replaced by more intensive written assignments), aligned perfectly with my approach to learning. The clear timelines and well-defined milestones offered a steady stream of those “task-completed” dopamine boosts we all love. Applications for the 2025 intake close in just one week. If you’re considering supercharging your mid-career development, I highly recommend this programme as a more technical alternative to the mainstream #MBA.
