On Friday, I had the privilege of watching the finalists of the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition present their doctoral studies. It was an incredible opportunity to witness the innovative research being conducted across various disciplines. As a research consultant and research supervisor, I am consistently impressed by the ground-breaking work of early-career researchers. It's inspiring to see how these scholars can distil complex ideas into clear and concise presentations. A big shoutout to all the participants for their hard work and dedication! Keep up the great work! Here are some tips you can learn from the 3MT participants to help you finalize your thesis: 1. Keep it Simple and Concise: The most important advice is to be straightforward. You have more than 3 pages, but your space is also limited to present your research, so it's crucial to explain your work to your reader clearly. Avoid using jargon and technical terms that your audience/ examiners may not understand. 2. Tell a Story: A compelling story can captivate your reader and make your research more engaging. Think about what makes your research interesting and how to present it in a way that resonates with not only examiners but also your broader discipline. 3. Use Visuals Effectively: Visuals (graphs, visual representations, tables ,figures) can enhance your thesis and make your research more engaging. However, it's essential to use them sparingly and ensure they are relevant to your message. 4. Get Feedback: Seek input from your supervisor, colleagues, and friends on your chapters. Feedback can help you identify areas for improvement. In addition to these tips, consider the following when finalizing your thesis: - Ensure that your thesis is well-organized and clearly written. It should be easy to read and understand. - Proofread your thesis carefully to eliminate any grammatical or spelling errors. - Submit your thesis on time—don’t wait until the last minute!
