Imagine a world where doctors could accurately track the brain development of children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This research from the University of Pretoria is paving the way for just that! The Problem: Limited Tools: Measuring height and weight is common to understand growth, but it doesn't tell usabout brain development. Expensive Technology: High-powered MRI machines are too expensive and impractical for many LMICs. The Solution: Low-Field MRI: This new technology is portable, affordable, and requires less infrastructure than traditional MRI machines. UNITY Project: This global partnership is exploring how low-field MRI can be used to study brain development in LMICs. Why is this important? - Early Intervention: Understanding brain development can help identify children at risk for developmental delays, allowing for earlier intervention. - Better Health Outcomes: Early intervention can lead to better long-term health and education outcomes for children. - Improved Healthcare: This research could revolutionise how doctors in LMICs diagnose and treat developmental issues. By supporting research like this, we can help create a healthier future for children around the world! https://lnkd.in/dEFtKMcp #HIV #CellularResearch #Africa #ICMM #LifeChangers #FacultyofHealthSciences #ResearchThatMatters #stemcells #transplants #UniversityofPretoria #FacultyofHealthSciences #LifeChangers #UPCellularandMolecularMedicine #HealthRevolution #FutureMedicine #AIandHealth #GeneTherapyRevolution #PrecisionMedicine #InnovationInHealth #GlobalHealth #BrainDevelopment #UNITYProject #MRI #LMICs

We engage in transdisciplinary and translational research and innovation to find sustainable bench to bedside solutions
About us
The ICMM is a research space where innovation and dedication are combined and applied to the current health burden in South Africa. We are involved in the development of intellectual property ranging from the clinical application of different types of adult stem cells to the analysis of the genetics underlying disease cause, susceptibility, and severity, which can then be translated into diagnostic and therapeutic products.

University of Pretoria researchers have uncovered valuable information that could help doctors better diagnose and treat oral tumours. By studying the expression of certain proteins, they've developed a more accurate way to distinguish between ameloblastoma (AB) and ameloblastic carcinoma (AC). Key Findings: - Proliferation Index: Higher levels of the Ki-67 protein, a marker of cell growth, were found in ameloblastic carcinomas, indicating faster tumour growth. - Stem Cell Markers: While some stem cell markers were expressed in both types of tumours, the levels were generally higher in ameloblastic carcinomas. Why is this important? Accurate diagnosis is crucial for selecting the right treatment. This research could lead to more effective treatment options for patients with ameloblastic carcinoma. https://lnkd.in/d8xN8Awj. #HIV #CellularResearch #Africa #ICMM #LifeChangers #FacultyofHealthSciences #ResearchThatMatters #stemcells #transplants #UniversityofPretoria #FacultyofHealthSciences #LifeChangers #UPCellularandMolecularMedicine #HealthRevolution #FutureMedicine #AIandHealth #GeneTherapyRevolution #PrecisionMedicine #InnovationInHealth #OralHealth #CancerResearch #UniversityofPretoria #OralPathology

New research is shedding light on potential treatments for neonatal encephalopathy (NE) with suspected hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) , a serious condition affecting newborns. While therapeutic hypothermia remains the golden standard of care, researchers are investigating alternative treatment options, including: - Melatonin: This hormone has shown promise in reducing brain damage in animal studies. - Caffeine Citrate: This stimulant has been used to treat apnoea in premature infants and may also benefit those with HIE. - Stem Cells: Autologous cord blood stem cells are being explored for their potential neuroprotective effects. - Epoetin Alfa: This drug, used to treat anaemia, may also help reduce brain damage in HIE. Allopurinal: This medication, typically used for gout, is being investigated for its potential to protect brain cells. These emerging treatments could offer hope for infants with HIE, especially in regions where therapeutic hypothermia may not be readily available. Cell and gene therapies are at the forefront of a medical revolution, promising to redefine how we treat diseases. CAR T-cell therapy and gene therapies are leading the charge. CAR T-cell therapy involves engineering patients' T cells to recognise and attack cancer cells. Gene therapies, on the other hand, involve replacing faulty genes with healthy ones or introducing new genes to treat diseases. These therapies offer hope for patients with a wide range of conditions, from blood cancers to genetic disorders. By targeting the root causes of diseases, they have the potential to provide long-lasting, even curative, treatments. As research continues to advance, we can envision a future where diseases are no longer a barrier to a healthy, fulfilling life. The possibilities are endless. Let's explore the potential of these groundbreaking therapies and work towards a brighter, healthier future for all. https://lnkd.in/eWS5pk7K #HIV #CellularResearch #Africa #ICMM #LifeChangers #FacultyofHealthSciences #ResearchThatMatters #stemcells #transplants #UniversityofPretoria #FacultyofHealthSciences #LifeChangers #UPCellularandMolecularMedicine

Obesity doesn't affect everyone in the same way. Our research with mice shows that males and females gain weight differently when fed a diet that causes obesity. Males tend to gain weight faster than females. However, regardless of sex, obesity's impact on other organs can be seen early on in the weight gain process, which can later lead to some of the conditions linked to obesity. https://lnkd.in/dJK--jpu #Obesity #ObesityWeek #Weightgain #ObesityandSex #ObesityResearch #UniversityOfPretoria
