In 2023–2024, our partners in Kyrgyzstan and Belarus conducted an in-depth community-led assessment of access to viral load and drug resistance testing. 🔹 95% of PLHIV in both countries underwent viral load testing last year, but disparities in awareness persist. 🔹 Only one drug resistance test is registered in Belarus, while Kyrgyzstan lacks a clear protocol for testing. 🔹 Both countries are transitioning to dolutegravir-based regimens, potentially reducing demand for drug resistance testing. Last October, a diverse stakeholder group from around the world convened at Sandton City to delve into the concept of Community-Led Monitoring (CLM). Our discussions revolved around the outcomes and impacts of implementing CLM, exploring its historical roots, strategic implications, and practical advantages while reflecting on our collective journey. Valuable insights from various stakeholders, including implementers, funders, donors, social impact investors, government, academia and private sector shed light on the evolving landscape of CLM. 🔎 Key Learnings: - CLM's applicability extends beyond the health sector. - Collaborative efforts across multiple sectors are crucial for advancing CLM establishment. - Embracing opportunities within challenges is the way forward. “The Citizen Science Life Maps (CS-LM) project is a key component implemented by ITPC and funded by Bill and Melinda Gates in 2022. This project uses a unique form of citizen journalism that documents the perspectives and priorities of people living with or at risk of HIV and Aids. Specifically, citizen journalism is an innovative data collection technique that involves Recipients of Care (ROC) documenting their everyday life experiences with HIV and Aids. This project uses qualitative approaches such as photographs, videos and textual narratives to document real-life experiences of ROCs through a community lens, focusing on their experiences with access to HIV treatment and care, as well as other lifestyle factors that impact their access to healthcare services.” - Khokhelwa Zokwana, Life Maps Officer, ITPC. The Citizen Science Life Maps project has officially come to an end, and what a journey it has been. The close-out meetings in Malawi and South Africa marked a bittersweet conclusion. These smiles from our Malawi participants as they received their certificates on December 2, 2024, show the joy of accomplishment mixed with the sadness of farewell. Thank you to everyone who made this project a success!
