It is always hugely motivational to be in situ with the impact we're creating on the ground, and hear about the day to day of delivering services in informal settlements. "And with the South African summer setting in, we're excited to grow our event services as well. Highlights from this project are available to watch in our short film: kaloola.co.za
In order to assess the viability of user-paid sanitation services in South Africa, a proposed project aims to assess user-uptake, political acceptability and financial sustainability in the context of South African informal settlements. The project builds upon the successful findings of a small pilot with container-based sanitation technology in two informal settlements in South Africa - both revealing a high likelihood of success for user-paid sanitation services. In order to build enough confidence to secure private sanitation service providers and investors for roll-out of user-paid sanitation services, it is required to demonstrate the concept with several thousand households. This project utilises Loowatt Ltd Toilet Technology as a desirable and commercially viable solution. This project has attracted interest from Unilever Transform who is providing support through co-funding, whilst further discussions continue with other partners to aid with support. Khanyisa Projects has been contracted to coordinate this project. https://bit.ly/3VfnbYH #SanitationForAll #SASTEP #sanitationinnovation #sanitationtechnology #NGSKnowledgeHub

Ntando Eben Mbhele takes us on a tour through Jamaica informal settlement in the Kenville area in Durban. Thanks for sharing Eben! 💜
Take a walk with me through an informal settlement. Most are like this - on the side of a hill, old tyres make great stairways and foundations for homes. Everything is informal, yet creative and so necessary. The blue metal building is the shared community toilets, showers and wash basins - taps are gold so have been replaced by all things plastic and just functional - these toilets have just been upgraded and the water runs and people have access. Just next to them, some communal pit toilets (since shared toilets close in the early evening) - The ponds at the bottom are at the Northwen waste water treatment plant, being refurbished to be more efficient and actually treat and handle more waste. Formal houses right next to informal structures. Rate payers vs informal dwellers. I’m home toilets vs self made out toilets. One household at a time we aim to win over families and move them from unsafe pit toilets to safely managed and dignified home toilets. All the ‘mini shacks’ near the pathway are pit toilets. Unsafe, home made but necessary. Each week we gain new customers and help one more household to have better health, more options and some agency in how they handle their business. It’s a tough environment to work in but our customer a faced with living here and facing even more hardships, day and night. Notice how little space there is between homes. Notice the food gardens in shared spaces. This is Jamaica informal settlement in the Kenville area in Durban. Kaloola uses the Loowatt Ltd toilet. These statistics highlight the important work we are doing in our communities. We are proud to be making a real difference to many lives through safe sanitation. 💜
When you're sat on the 🚽 today, please consider these eye-opening statistics 👀 👉 3.6 billion people – Almost half of the world’s population lacks access to safe sanitation. (WHO, UNICEF, 2021) 👉 494 million people – Still practice open defecation due to lack of toilets. (WHO, UNICEF, 2021) 👉 1 in 5 healthcare facilities – Lack basic sanitation services, affecting 1.7 billion people globally. (WHO, UNICEF, 2020) 👉 700,000 children under 5 – Die each year from diseases related to poor sanitation, hygiene, and unsafe drinking water, such as diarrhea. (WHO, 2021) 👉 $223 billion annually – The estimated global economic cost of inadequate sanitation due to healthcare costs and loss of productivity. (World Bank, 2016) 👉 2 billion people – Drink water contaminated with feces, increasing risks of diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. (WHO, 2022) 👉 Women and girls – Are disproportionately affected, with lack of sanitation facilities in schools contributing to higher dropout rates and increased vulnerability to violence. (UNICEF, 2021) 👉 20-25% reduction – Improved sanitation could reduce the incidence of diarrheal diseases globally by 20-25%. (UN Water, 2022) Why are we sharing this? To highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions, such as the waterless technologies developed by Loowatt Ltd, to address the global sanitation crisis and improve quality of life for millions of people. The impact felt by Loowatt Ltd toilets is already immense, but we are driven everyday to change the lives of those without access to safe and hygienic sanitation solutions. Thank you for your support! 💚
