About us
McDonald’s South Africa (SA) opened its first restaurant in November 1995. Today, we operate over 360 restaurants in all nine provinces and proudly serve an estimated 8 million customers a month. A great place to work for, not only for a job but also a career. McDonald’s SA has over 15000 employees at various levels, including franchisees, restaurant managers and crew. These are predominantly from the youth category with approximately 40% of management having started their careers in our restaurants. McDonald’s is renowned for its training throughout the world and are proud to have our very own Hamburger University (HU), only one of nine in the world. HU is an extension of our commitment to our people - shaping careers, fostering talent, developing leaders, and leveraging lifelong learning. Diversity and Inclusion is a value that we live, with our staff being indicative of our rainbow nation. 97% of staff are black, 65% female with 50% of those in management levels. Digitization has been a focus for the past 10 years, seeing our restaurants offering contemporary locations for customers to enjoy their favourite meals, including Digital Menu Boards and Self Ordering Kiosks to meet customers experiences.

It was an honor to speak at the University of Pretoria's Faculty of Engineering last week. As I shared, "We don’t have a leader problem in South Africa—or even the world. We have a leadership problem." Leadership starts with leading ourselves. Some go on to lead people, and fewer still lead organizations. But at every level, leadership is a responsibility—a duty of service to others. True leadership is about stepping up, leaning in, and making a positive impact—not for reward, not for recognition, but because it’s simply the right thing to do. #Leadership #ServantLeadership #Inspiration #Innovation #UniversityOfPretoria #McDonaldsSA #Engineering

Thank you to Mr Greg Solomon, the CEO of McDonald's RSA, for a insightful talk about leadership. A good mix of finance, passion for people and willingness to take a risk, are some of the ingredients you need to lead those around you. Thank you, Prof Francis Petersen, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria , for gracing us with your presence. So privileged to be going back to my roots. Engineers are more than just problem solvers – they are critical, versatile players in any business environment. Whether it's in manufacturing, technology, retail, or beyond, their skill set extends far beyond technical know-how – they bring solutions that drive efficiency, growth, and sustainability. #Engineering #BusinessGrowth #Innovation #ProblemSolving #Leadership
Invitation: Mr Greg Solomon, the Chief Executive Officer of McDonald's South Africa, will be the speaker at the Hendrik van der Bijl Memorial Lecture on 10 October 2024 at 17:30. Over the past 12 years, Greg Solomon has led significant growth, expanding the business threefold. His benchmarks for success include sales growth, market share expansion, talent development, DEI initiatives, localization, operational excellence, and profitability. With the business now approaching 400 restaurants and employing 15,000 people, the future looks bright. New priorities like technology, digitization, modernization, 4IR, and brand purpose are becoming increasingly important, yet Greg emphasizes that people and culture will remain the company’s key competitive advantage. Originally trained as a civil engineer, Greg brings a wealth of experience beyond the quick-service restaurant industry, including construction, project management, real estate, supply chain, marketing, brand management, and profitability. Greg’s leadership is people-centric, with a strong focus on customer experience, brand transformation, and shareholder value. His relentless drive has earned him a place on McDonald’s South Africa's board, where he also chairs the Transformation and Sustainability Subcommittee. In honour of literacy month in September, we’ve embarked on a mission to donate over 1 million books to schools and Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) across Mzansi. In partnership with the Springbok Sevens team, we donated 5000 books to the community of Athlone at an Early Childhood Development Centre, Christine Revell’s Children’s Home. The atmosphere was filled with smiles, laughter, and joy as the players engaged with the children. The order of the day was playing and reading books, all in an effort to help combat poor literacy skills in South Africa. Even off the field, the Springbok Sevens team show that no DNA just the future of RSA. #1millionbooks #LendAHand #TogetherMzansi

As August draws to an end let’s never forget the courage of the +20,000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, protesting for women’s rights. At McDonald’s South Africa, our commitment to empowerment is reflected in the remarkable women who make up 60% of our 15,000 strong team. In their own right as individuals they have earned their place through talent, dedication, and excellence. Twice a year, our McDonald’s South Africa Women’s Leadership Network team members host conversations on the real issues facing women today. It's essential that companies and leaders not only discuss Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) but also take meaningful action to create opportunities. While we may not be able to change the world overnight, we can make a difference: one person; one restaurant and one community at a time ! #McDonaldswomen #womeninconversation #DEI

"Celebrate failure, for every ten failures, there is one victory." - Greg Solomon, CEO, McDonald's South Africa
The leadership and mental wellness talk in partnership with GIBS Business School (Gordon Institute of Business Science) and SuperLead Advisory was heartwarming. It was incredible to see so many professionals gathered to discuss such an important topic, and even more eye-opening to witness just how critical this conversation is. I feel like I’m doing an injustice by trying to reflect on last night in just a single post. What resonated deeply with me were the questions from the audience, underscoring the need to move beyond mental wellness as a tick-box exercise. Instead, it must become an integral part of our lives, conversations, and actions—on and off the clock. A special thank you to my co-host, Dr. Maanda Tshifularo, PhD, for your astute moderation and facilitation of the panel. You allowed the dialogue to unfold in a safe, respectful, and enlightening way. To our phenomenal panelists: Dr. Tumi, every time I engage with you, I’m in awe. There is so much power in your simplicity, honesty, and vulnerability. You exemplify what so many of us leaders should strive for—being unapologetically human. Greg, my brother and friend, you are a class act and a true inspiration. Thank you for simplifying positive leadership and constantly reminding us of the 'Golden Thread' – “It’s the little things.” Thank you to GIBS, in partnership with 'Off The Clock' and SuperLead for hosting this crucial conversation, and to everyone who attended—let’s continue these nuanced discussions. But more importantly, let’s be intentional about turning dialogue into action. A few highlights that stood out for me: “Celebrate failure, for every ten failures, there is one victory.” - Greg Solomon, CEO, McDonald's South Africa “A leader with a strong value system becomes the fabric and DNA of the organisation.” - Dr. Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela, CEO, South African Health Products Regulatory Authority
