  • Don’t take a holiday from your medication As the holiday season unfolds, it is time for relaxation, travel and taking a break from the daily grind for most of us. However, pharmacy professionals are issuing a vital reminder not to pause or neglect prescribed chronic medication amidst all the festive excitement.  “The risks are real and serious. It is crucial to maintain your medication schedule to keep your health stable all year round," warns Sameera Kumandan, a pharmacist at Medipost Pharmacy, South Africa's first courier pharmacy.

  • We’re all so caught up in the daily grind of preparing meals, juggling family life and keeping up with never-ending work demands that it is easy to fall into a routine where we merely tick off tasks, barely pausing to consider our health. Often, it is only when a major health scare strikes that we finally take a moment to listen to our bodies. But what if we didn't wait for that wake-up call? Sameera Kumandan, a pharmacist at Medipost Holdings, South Africa's first courier pharmacy, emphasises the seriousness of heart disease. "Heart conditions are one of the main causes of illness and death around the world and have a big impact on our country. Sadly, these illnesses often progress quietly, so awareness and prevention are essential," she says. She advises patients to stay alert to any small changes in their health and watch for signs like ongoing headaches, shortness of breath or swollen ankles, which could point to heart problems. If you notice something feeling 'off' see your healthcare provider. Regular blood pressure checks can catch issues early and help prevent serious events. Early detection is key because untreated high blood pressure can lead to permanent heart damage. Through education and support, pharmacists can make a real difference in preventing serious health problems. “When diagnosed with heart disease, many patients feel overwhelmed. Pharmacists can support patients by helping them make informed choices about food, exercise and other heart-healthy habits, explaining how these choices improve heart health," Sameera says.

  • Conrad Venter: My Medipost journey   My journey at Medipost Pharmacy began in 2005, and little did I realise at the time how much my life would change over the next 19 years!   Career growth and development What started as an Assistant position in the Prime Cure Department, where I was a jack of all trades, gradually evolved into numerous opportunities and growth that are rare in many other companies.   Throughout my time with Medipost, I have held multiple positions. My first managerial role came when Medipost was awarded the GEMS contract. It was an exciting time in the company, marked by tremendous growth and many unknowns that eventually paved the way for my future career progression.   Innovative contributions After several years in the GEMS Department, I transferred to the HIV Department, where I helped establish the clinical contact centre for HIV patients. This newly created department was a first for Medipost, providing HIV patients and prescribers with direct access to pharmacists and assistants. I managed this department for several years, and due to its immense success and the positive feedback we received, this service was expanded to accommodate all chronic patients. It is now known as the IPC Department.   When the opportunity arose to apply for the HIV Department Manager position, it was the next logical step in my career. The opportunities Medipost has given me over the years provided me with the experience needed to take on this new challenge, and I’m happy to say I still enjoy every day in my role with a great team that supports me.   I believe self-improvement is a continuous process. Even after 19 years at the company, I was again given the opportunity to enrol in a managerial course, which I recently completed.   Inclusive and supportive work environment What’s the moral of the story? Medipost Pharmacy recognises and rewards passion and hard work. It allows its employees to grow and develop, as long as they are willing to put in the effort. Medipost is a richly diverse company, and as a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve always felt at home and encouraged to be myself.   If you are willing to step out of your comfort zone with a hunger to learn and improve, Medipost can be that home and family for you.   I am looking forward to my next 20 years with Medipost and am excited to see what opportunities await us. Enjoy the journey!

  • Life Ngubane: My Medipost journey   Career growth and opportunities My journey at Medipost began in December 2011 when I joined as an administrator. On the second day of my induction, HR approached me with an offer to work at MediTraining as their receptionist. They were specifically looking for a well-spoken individual with disabilities, and I guess I made a good impression during my interview. And so, my journey at Medipost began.   Skill development and personal growth A few months into my role, I embarked on the Learner Basic Pharmacist course – answering calls for the rest of my life was never the plan. I remember asking about Medipost’s intentions for my growth during my interview, and they certainly kept their word.   In the second year of the course, I transitioned to Quality Assurance (QA) as a line regulator. Shortly after, an opportunity arose in the Receiving Department of Production, and I was invited to join the team. From 2013 to 2014, I served as an Admin Receiver. This position taught me a great deal about accountability, ensuring that the items received from suppliers matched their invoices and were not damaged.   Towards the end of 2014, I moved to Order Processing, where I currently work as a Rejection Pharmacist Assistant. My responsibilities later expanded to include the claiming of scripts, and now I handle emails and resolve queries from various Medipost departments.   Supportive work environment I can confidently say that Medipost has truly supported my growth and brought positive change into my life. Some lessons can’t be found in books; they must be learned through the journey of life.   Through Medipost, I’ve discovered skills I never knew I had, and as a person living with a disability, I’ve realised the possibilities within myself. Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that limitations are just a word used by those who are afraid to try.
