About us

Mohair, the fleece of the Angora goat, is one of the world’s most beautiful and exclusive sustainable natural fibres. Versatile by nature, Mohair is coveted by the world’s fashion industry elite, as well as by interior designers, craft specialists, industrial fibre specialists and the tourism sector. Mohair is known worldwide as “the noble fibre” or “the diamond fibre” due to its exclusive natural qualities, which include lustre, resilience and colour reflection. South Africa is the biggest global producer of Mohair, and the Karoo area of the Eastern Cape is where most of the Angora goats are farmed. Port Elizabeth is known as the Mohair capital of the world, with the bulk of the world’s Mohair passing through its port. Angora goats are shorn twice a year and are not harmed in any way during the process. In the pursuit of perfection, their fleece has been refined through consistently high breeding standards and meticulous genetic selection. Angora goats thrive in the Karoo, with its combination of hot, dry summers, cold winters and semi-desert vegetation. This combination of best practice farming and best environment for Angora goats has set South Africa apart. In realising the responsibility that goes with being the most reliable source of quality Mohair, Mohair South Africa was established to perform functions aimed at the advancement of the entire Mohair industry, and the South African Mohair Sector in particular. To achieve this objective, it is our vision to seek international partnerships and alliances that will enhance the consumption of Cape Mohair, and lead to sustainable demand and profitability for all industry players – from producer to processor, and from buyer to manufacturer. We believe that shared knowledge and a vigorous commitment to continuous improvement are all critical ingredients for the future success of the industry.

  • November has been a busy month with farm visits, training, auctions, ram sales, the Daidoh Awards, and the Textile Exchange Conference in Pasadena, California, to name a few. This year’s Textile Exchange conference explored bold actions and collaborative strategies needed to address the environmental, social, and legislative challenges shaping the future of textiles. For Mohair South Africa, attending the conference was an opportunity to learn, share, and reflect on mohair's vital role in an ecologically and economically sustainable future.
