At MTN, we believe everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life, with the right to enjoy connectivity safely and freely. Our commitment to responsible digital communications is guided by global organisations and law enforcement dedicated to safeguarding users, especially vulnerable children. It’s essential for parents and caregivers to be informed and prepared to ensure children’s digital safety. We recently launched the Online Child Safety African Insights Reports for Nigeria, South Sudan, and Zambia as part of our Help Children Be Children programme. Conducted by Ipsos, this research reveals the growing online risks children face, including the mental health impacts of cyberbullying and harmful content. In recent months, much attention has been focused on MTN's financial performance, particularly in Nigeria, our largest market. Therefore, in our interim earnings report for the first half of 2024, we observed a decline in EBITDA and service revenue. However, total subscribers saw a slight increase, demonstrating our continued growth despite challenges. The devaluation of the naira and the ongoing conflict in Sudan have significantly impacted our results. For a deeper understanding of these dynamics, listen to our group CFO, Tsholofelo Molefe CA(SA), who emphasizes that while we maintained solid underlying performance, macroeconomic headwinds affected our operating results. Tsholofelo shares valuable insights into MTN’s financial performance for the first half of 2024. 🎧 [Listen here] (https://bit.ly/4jqO5In) via Business Day on BusinessLiveSA #DoingGoodTogether

On January 20, 2001, MTN celebrated a historic victory by securing the coveted Nigerian GSM licence. This achievement was the result of months of dedication and strategic planning, underscoring MTN's ambition in the telecommunications landscape. MTN's interest in Nigeria began in 1998, revealing the vast potential of a nation with over 120 million people. After navigating political shifts and a high-stakes auction, MTN secured the licence for US$285 million, marking a significant milestone. Within seven months, MTN Nigeria launched operations, quickly gaining 50,000 customers and transforming a communication landscape with only 700,000 fixed lines at the time. The introduction of per-second billing and a variety of value-added services revolutionised how millions of Nigerians connected. MTN also prioritised social responsibility, investing in education and community initiatives that fostered strong relationships with the people it served. By Q3 2024, MTN Nigeria served almost 77 million subscribers and contributed 23% to MTN Group's service revenue. As we reflect on this journey, it’s clear that nothing happens by chance; every move counts. MTN's story in Nigeria is a testament to vision, determination, and the transformative power of connectivity.
