Building: Bahrain World Trade Center Location: Manama, Bahrain 🇧🇭 Completed: 2008 Height: 240m / 787 ft Floor Area: 88,715m sq. Floors: 50 Architect: Atkins The Bahrain World Trade Center is a 240 metre high, 50-floor, twin tower skyscrapers located in Manama, Bahrain. Designed by the multi-national architectural firm Atkins, construction on the towers was completed in 2008. It is the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design. The wind turbines were developed, built and installed by the Danish company Norwin A/S. It currently ranks as the second-tallest building in Bahrain, after the twin towers of the Bahrain Financial Harbour. The two towers are linked via three skybridges, each holding a 225 kW wind turbine, totalling 675 kW of wind power capacity. Each of these turbines measure 29m (95 ft) in diameter, and is aligned north, which is the direction from which air from the Persian Gulf blows in. The sail-shaped buildings on either side are designed to funnel wind through the gap to provide accelerated wind passing through the turbines. This was confirmed by wind tunnel tests, which showed that the buildings create an S-shaped flow, ensuring that any wind coming within a 45° angle to either side of the central axis will create a wind stream that remains perpendicular to the turbines. This significantly increases their potential to generate electricity. The wind turbines provide up to 15% of the towers' total power consumption, or approximately 1.1 to 1.3 GWh a year. Sustainability 🌳 The project has received several awards for sustainability, including: The 2006 LEAF Award for Best Use of Technology within a Large Scheme The Arab Construction World for Sustainable Design Award Key Project Team 🏙️ Architect Atkins AtkinsRéalis Main Contractors NASS Group & Corporation Murray & Roberts Concor Construction (Pty) Ltd Wind Turbines Norwin A/S Elsam Engineering A/S - (today part of Ørsted) Wind & Environment BMT Building Services Mercury Facade Maintenance Equipment Tractel Elevators Otis Elevator Co. Murray & Roberts Cementation looking to add value beyond mine execution While contractors are employed primarily to execute projects on behalf of mining companies and project houses, experienced underground mining specialists like Murray & Roberts Cementation also offer invaluable insights from earlier stages of development. “Over the decades, we have found that our early engagement with clients provides many vital opportunities to optimise their ideas and plans,” Graham Chamberlain, New Business Director at Murray & Roberts Cementation, says. “Especially in the shaft sinking phase – which is highly capital intensive – the devil is in the detail, and there are many aspects to consider when working to achieve a streamlined and cost effective process.” https://lnkd.in/d3n4EzgZ
