Early Childhood Development (ECD) in South Africa is at a pivotal moment. With many practitioners working in under-resourced areas, the need for innovative tools and professional development has never been more urgent. To build a stronger ECD system, we must equip practitioners with the skills, knowledge, and digital competencies necessary to meet the evolving demands of early education. 'To lead a young child by the hand'
About us
Ntataise means “to lead a young child by the hand” in SeSotho. We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation founded in South Africa in 1980 with the objective of helping women in disadvantaged rural communities gain the knowledge and skills needed to establish and sustain effective Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes for children in their care. Ntataise’s vision is to ensure that the growing numbers of vulnerable children living in marginalized communities of South Africa gain access to quality early childhood development opportunities which support their physical, emotional and cognitive growth. To achieve this, Ntataise focuses on supporting the development of leaders within the sector both at grassroots level in community based pre-schools and ECD programmes as well as in the training organisations that support these women working directly with young children. Today Ntataise’s work is divided between its training and development programmes which work directly with pre-schools and communities and its capacity building and support programme for the Network of 21 resource and training ECD organisations across 7 provinces of South Africa.

From Adversity to Empowerment: Millicent's Journey Through Caregiver Learning Through Play (CLTP) Training There is transformative power of caregiver training- meet Millicent, a dedicated caregiver from Atlantis, whose journey inspires us all. Growing up in a single-parent household with five siblings, Millicent's mother prioritized education, often sacrificing resources for toys and play. Millicent's dreams of becoming a lawyer were put on hold when she fell pregnant in her 4th year. This was followed by depression and lost ambition. While walking with her daughter, Millicent encountered our Play Facilitators, who introduced her to play-based learning. This sparked a newfound passion for teaching young children. Millicent has since completed her Level 4 training, reigniting her dreams and equipping her with: ✔️ Confidence in teaching young children. ✔️ Understanding of play-based learning's cognitive benefits. ✔️ Enhanced emotional intelligence. ✔️ Stronger bonds with her children. Millicent's story highlights: ✔️ Our training’s potential to empower. ✔️ Play-based learning's transformative impact on children's development. ✔️ Importance of accessible resources for caregivers. Join us in celebrating Millicent's success!

Investing in the Future of South Africa: The Power of Early Childhood Development In South Africa, only 1 in 6 children under the age of 6 have access to early childhood development (ECD) programmes. This staggering statistic underscores a critical gap in the foundational education and care that young children need to thrive. Without early intervention, many children miss out on key opportunities to build the skills necessary for future success in school and life. At Ntataise, we are committed to bridging this gap by providing quality early childhood education to underserved communities across South Africa. Through training, resources, and support for ECD practitioners, we empower educators to deliver transformative learning experiences to the youngest minds. By investing in South Africa’s children, we’re investing in a brighter, stronger future for all of us. For Every Child, Every Right On 20 November, we celebrate World Children’s Day—a day dedicated to promoting togetherness, raising awareness about children’s rights, and improving their welfare worldwide. This date is special: 📜 In 1959, the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, 🤝 In 1989, the Convention on the Rights of the Child was established. 🎉 Since 1990, it marks the anniversary of both historic milestones. World Children’s Day reminds us that everyone—parents, teachers, healthcare workers, leaders, and children—can create positive change. Together, we can advocate for children's rights and build a better future for every child. Let’s make their voices heard and their rights protected. 💙 #WorldChildrensDay #ForEveryChildEveryRight #ChildrensRights #TogetherForChildren

Up now, a panel discussing collaboration with government departments at provincial levels. In some provinces, our network members have participated in provincial strategy sessions. Puleng says government officials should see Ntataise Network Members as assets in implementing their work and vice versa. We are all striving to increase access and quality for vulnerable young children. It makes sense for all of us to work together. #ntataisenetwork #earlyyears #earlychildhooddevelopment #ECD
