In the last quarter of 2023, SAPPO conducted an online survey to determine which research and development (R&D) areas were most pertinent to various industry role-players. SAPPO, as a farmers’ organisation, values farmers' opinions highly. Therefore, the R&D committee has used and will continue to use information from farmers to guide research funding in South Africa. Number Two Piggeries (N2P) held their 20th Hog Day during the last week of October 2024, hosting over 200 delegates. The event theme, "Perseverance, Integrity, Grit," was especially appropriate given the economic realities facing the pig industry. At the awards function, N2P celebrated the outstanding performance contributions made by the recipients on their units. The AFMA Symposium 2024, held on 31 October at the CSIR Convention Centre, was a resounding success, drawing 480 delegates from across the animal feed industry and related value chain roleplayers. With the theme "Innovate for Success in Disruptive Times", the event focused on equipping participants with the knowledge and strategies needed to navigate a rapidly changing landscape. The event provided a platform for collaboration, networking, and exchanging ideas, setting the stage for a more innovative and resilient feed industry. In addition, several student excellence awards were also awarded, highlighting the quality of student research being conducted at South African universities. In week 49 of 2024, the pork producer price averaged R32,13/kg, 0,8% lower than the previous week. The yellow maize price averaged R5 087/t, 3,8% higher than the previous week. Producer prices in relation to yellow maize prices averaged 6,3, 4,5% lower than the previous week.
