  • 🤝Day of Reconciliation🤝 Reconciliation is about more than restoring relationships; it’s about building a society where dignity and opportunity are within reach for all. True healing in South Africa requires addressing the roots of inequality, not just bridging divides. And this responsibility isn’t one for leaders alone—it’s a commitment we all share if we want to foster a deeper understanding of each other and safeguard peace. Real change grows from the choices we make and the values we act on, both individually and together. If we want a more prosperous, united and inclusive South Africa, we all need to be the "change we want to see" and play our part —whether big or small—to help make it happen. #DayOfReconciliation #EconomicJustice #BridgingTheDivide

  • As an employer, are you aware that South Africa introduced significant updates to its Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations in July 2024, aimed at enhancing workplace safety and aligning with international standards? ⚕️⛑️⚖️ Key Updates: 📈 Enhanced Reporting: Employers must submit detailed incident reports and maintain records of workplace injuries and illnesses for better transparency. ⚖️Stricter Enforcement: Non-compliance now carries harsher penalties, including increased fines and potential shutdowns. 🧠 Mental Health Focus: Employers are required to implement mental health support programs, including counselling access and awareness initiatives. 📖 Training Requirements: Regular training on OHS practices is mandated for all employees to ensure up-to-date knowledge. ⛑️Advanced Safety Gear: The regulations encourage investment in state-of-the-art protective equipment and technology to prevent accidents. 💺Ergonomic Workspaces: Employers must create ergonomically designed work areas to minimise physical strain on employees. 🚨Emergency Preparedness: Updated guidelines require employers to develop and frequently update emergency response plans, including regular drills. If you need expert advice or assistance or even an assessment of your organisation's compliance with the latest updates to OHS, email Mala Chetty at mala@scribantelabour.co.za or call 0860 764 078.  #OHSUpdates #EnsureCompliance#WeCanHelp

  • In the wake of the Great Resignation, many employees find themselves caught in a state of detachment—disillusioned but reluctant to move on, says Forbes in their September newsletter. This “lukewarm” mindset referred to as the Great Detachment presents a tough challenge for employers striving for profitability and a thriving work culture. When employees are merely going through the motions, creativity and productivity take a hit, affecting revenue. While those deeply unhappy in their jobs will seek new opportunities, many others opt for a quieter form of disengagement. They may not be leaving, but their indifference can cast a shadow over the entire organisation, masking deeper issues behind a façade of retention. Just because employees are staying put doesn't mean they’re happy. According to experts, the Great Detachment stems from a breakdown of trust, with fear and anxiety causing employees to withdraw in the absence of open communication. Re-engaging this workforce requires identifying trust issues and rebuilding through transparency, active listening, and employee involvement in decision-making. Investing in continuous learning and injecting interest into daily routines can also combat stagnation. So, cultivate a more engaged workforce by building trust, improving communication, empowering growth and stimulating interest: it’s what disillusioned workers are looking for.

  • Occupational Care South Africa recently revealed that sick leave abuse is costing our economy between ZAR 12-16 billion per year. Even though it’s intended solely for situations where someone is genuinely unfit to work due to health issues, some employees may misuse sick leave for reasons unrelated to illness or injury. Employers should, therefore, be alert to frequent or suspicious absences of employees, especially if they follow patterns such as consistently taking sick leave on Mondays or Fridays. Such behaviour may signal abuse and should prompt investigation, as it not only disrupts operations but also damages the trust and cooperation needed for a healthy workplace environment. To safeguard against fraud, employers must also ensure that all medical certificates comply with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) standards. Certificates must be signed by a registered medical practitioner and clearly indicate that the employee is unfit for work. Submitting a fake sick note can result in dismissal for dishonesty, as it undermines the trust between employer and employee. So by investigating and addressing suspected abuse early, employers can help maintain productivity and preserve team morale. • As AI reshapes industries globally, South Africa faces a unique challenge. With a staggering 33.50% unemployment rate in the second quarter of 2024, how can the country embrace AI without worsening job scarcity? But, how can it not? While many employees grapple with FOBO (Fear Of Being Obsolete), industry expert Arthur Goldstuck suggests that by viewing AI as a tool rather than a threat, we can seize the opportunities of technological progress and avoid being left behind. He argues that automation can lead to job upgrades and increased job creation, citing examples like Ford's Silverton plant. Additionally, while AI excels in many areas, it lacks human empathy and decision-making skills crucial in sectors like customer service. As South Africa navigates this technological revolution, the question remains: can the country harness AI's potential to create opportunities rather than eliminate them? Should we rather have FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)? The answer may lie in strategic implementation and upskilling initiatives, based on the tradeoffs companies are prepared to make. What do you think? Share your views on AI in the Comments section 👇. #SAUnemploymentAndAI #FOBOvsFOMO #JobCreation #EmbracingAI Source: https://lnkd.in/dVDv-gVP
