We’re excited to welcome our new Candidate Attorneys, Gauta Mashego and Jonathan West, to SECTION27!
About us
SECTION27 is a catalyst for social justice and a public interest law centre that uses the law to protect, promote and advance human rights. We work to achieve substantive equality and advance the constitutionally entrenched rights to: health care services, sufficient food, water and social security as set out in section 27 of the Constitution; and basic education as set out in section 29 of the Constitution. We do this through the use of law, public education, research and social mobilisation.

SECTION27 reposted this
This was the Sunday Times front page on 15 December 2024! Yes indeed - the R250m had to be returned to Gauteng Treasury as unspent. This then also became part of a bigger amount of R1.5 Billion that was unspent by this Department for Health Services. The tragedy is that they could have asked for the money to be rolled over. It is very concerning to read about the misinformation in this media report - the figures mentions for radiation treatment care in the private sector may be correct - what is however not portrayed is that existing outsourcing prices for radiation therapy is already in place for the public sector. It was the GDOH officials that were not willing to engage on these matters and repeatedly delayed processes to the extent that every one started believing this as a complex tender. Even for outsourcing there was best practice models from COVID19 already in place. GDOH even had the opportunity to listen to a 3 hour presentation on the how and the what to implement such. They chose to ignore all of that. They chose to misinform the the court and the public. Now the same patients that have been waiting for so many years again have to wait to hear whether they will indeed be treated with the current Service Level Agreements (SLA) that have been signed. And we do not even know whether any of these SLAs will continue after the end of the financial year. Planning for Radiation under the Siemens contract had to be halted due to some technical problems - no one speaks about that. NO the Cancer Alliance (South Africa) does not want to manage the GDOH - together with SECTION27 we only want to make sure that the Constitutional Rights of cancer patients are adhered to. It is a shame that they cannot even understand that basic principle! A luta Continua 👊🏽
