A panel moderated by Ms. Mosilo Sofonia from South African Tourism delved into servicing cruise lines with SA itineraries and packaging products: Thato Tlhomola (Amazing Africa) emphasised the shortfall of product in this region and multilingual tour guides. She also stressed the need for early planning, noting cruise liners book years in advance. Collaboration at each destination is key. Ross Volk (MSC Cruises) shared MSC’s impact: ZAR 330M invested, 75% local suppliers, and 5000 upcoming jobs. She called for improved infrastructure for large vessels and addressed safety concerns to boost the industry. Ross Volk also highlighted two key problems for the industry to focus on; -Infrastructure that can accommodate large vessels -Safety and security (negative publicity about South Africa). #SAT #CruiseTourismWorkshop2024

Dirk Botha from Transnet discusses the status and outlook of cruise infrastructure: “We need to enhance our tourism offerings to better support the infrastructure side and attract investment in this area. Interestingly, many ports with limited infrastructure still manage to draw major cruise lines. With this in mind, we must align supply and demand to grow East London as both a port and a vibrant tourism city.” As part of the staggered rollout from 2023 to 2032, there will be exciting developments such as: -The old HFO site converting to a multipurpose terminal (MPT). -Surrounding land at Latimer’s Landing transforming into maritime commercial spaces. -The Marine and Manufacturing slipway area shifting to maritime engineering.. #SAT #CruiseTourismWorkshop2024

The Cruise Tourism Workshop kicks off in East London today, shining a spotlight on the cruise tourism sector. With Africa accounting for less than 2% of global cruise passengers (source CLIA), there’s significant room to grow this industry to its full potential. These workshop aim to foster knowledge sharing between public and private stakeholders in the cruise tourism industry. The participants bring a wealth of insight and opportunities, working collaboratively to empower role players in this space. #SAT #CruiseTourismWorkshop2024
