In 2022, the world’s population surpassed 8 billion and is projected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, placing growing pressure on the environment and increasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The United Nations warns that the world is warming faster than ever due to GHGs, including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and synthetic chemicals, which have severe consequences for ecosystems, sustainability, and communities. To counter these effects, a coordinated global effort is needed, powered by technology and data that provide critical insights into GHG emissions, enabling scientists and decision-makers to monitor and mitigate climate change risks. How can technology help not only monitor but also mitigate emission production? A great example is that of Planet, in August this year they launched its first hyperspectral satellite to detect and monitor the Earth’s carbon dioxide and methane levels.
