Africa Renewables Investment Summit 25 & 26 November 2024 Commercialising Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) in an African context – lessons from South Africa’s BESIPPPP - 25 November at 14.00 - 15.00: The demand for battery energy storage systems (BESSs) is increasing in Africa. BESSs help store the energy generated by solar or wind and dispatch it to the grid when required. They also help increase grid capacity and resilience. This topic will explore the available commercial opportunities for BESSs and lessons that can be drawn from South Africa’s successful Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement (BESIPPP) programme. Session focus: • Bankability of BESSs • Commercialising BESSs • Cost of BESSs Chair: Teri Kruger, Founding Director, Synergetics Sustainable Solutions Panelists: Jarrod Lyons, Business Development Executive, Atlantis SEZ Christopher Ahlfeldt, Founder, Sustainability Specialist, Blue Horizon Energy Consulting Services Azwimbavhi Mamanyuha, General Manager: New Business and Engineering Innovation, Eskom Noah Cherera, Senior Electrical Engineer, Harmattan Renewables Rizqah MacGirlley, Technical Product Manager, Solar MD

Injury prevention is one of most sustainable practices. Especially preventing mortality & morbidity of our most vulnerable citizens, our children. Teri Kruger -Board Advisor, Speaker, SDG Skills Integrator has professionally & voluntarily supported the ethos for decades. Especially significant is the facilitation of a solar system that has been to the benefit of ChildSafeSA, a #nonprofit at the Red Cross Memorial Children Hospital in #CapeTown with free clean energy for a decade now. Supported by Kaloyan Dimov Frank Spencer Kimesh Chauhan Roxanne Harris amongst others, it still serves today to reduce their financial cost of power.
Child injuries & deaths due to inadequate or insufficient product designs that do not consider the mental & physical capabilities of children that may use or be exposed to the product. For instance, seatbelts in vehicles. Typically designed for adults, children are often held on the laps of parents sitting in the front passenger seat. Believing that they can keep their precious one safe. However, on impact, which can from your blindside you or rear ended cause the child to thrown from the car on impact. Therefore it is extremely important to place a child in a secured childseat in the backseat so they have a better chance of survival or, atleast, minimal injuries. ChildSafeSA has investigated the full extent of causes & consequences of child injuries for some decades & particularly team up with a range of partners to reduce the scourge of child deaths & injuries. Under the helm of Prof Marianne Vanderschuren alongside ChildSafeSA several years ago, an investigation into the plight of child passengers & pedestrians on #southafrican roads was undertaken & proposed mitigation measures to keep our children safe. Or at the least, reduce morbidity & mortality. #southafrica #childrensafety #carsafety

Prepare for this inevitable shutdown & thrive with effective strategies starting now. Sustainable practices can support your transition to a leaner & productive outcome #water #sustainablefarming #energyefficiency #agrisolar
This event will have a significant impact on many production systems & our food basket. It especially challenges the industrial & farming communities as well as Gauteng as an economic hub. Aside from efficiency measures, how best can this impacted communities prepare & mitigate towards a better future?

It’s been an amazing journey from the early days before the renewable energy industry was established in South Africa. Teri Kruger -Board Advisor, Speaker, SDG Skills Integrator joined the lobby in 2008 & was appointed as Director Stakeholder Relations for an international business in 2011. Dedicating time to poverty alleviation through new technologies & personal growth initiatives has been a particular focus within our program. Especially focused on skills development with an array of recipients over the years.

It was a proud moment when I stepped into a Western Cape Health facility recently to find this poster proudly displayed. The set of informative posters began with the original “Living Safely” which won accolades for its innovative way of educating parents, hospitals & caregivers of the ‘likely’ injuries that could occur as a child reaches each developmental stage. This was under auspices of Prof Sebastian van As & Prof Hein Rhode within the ChildSafe.org.za suite of interventions, articles, information dissemination & programs designed to reduce the trauma & deaths of our children that are avoidable with early & appropriate interventions & training. I also participated in the study ‘Child Injury Prevention in Traffic Study’ that was sponsored by UNICEF This entailed that I travelled to all 9 provinces in South Africa and interviewed a spectrum of people that were from child carers, NPO’s, Forensics, Trauma Specialists, emergency responders, legal professionals, government agencies, & police services amongst them. Representing a pool of around 200 individuals to validate the data that was collected academically & verifiably through the auspices of University of Cape Town & the Professors & caregivers at the Red Cross Children’s Memorial Hospital.
