What a phenomenal journey! Congratulations Yonelisa Petse, CFA 🏆 Keep up the great work! Your resilience and dedication is absolutely inspirational. 🥇
Allow me to reintroduce myself: my name is Yonelisa Petse, and I am a CFA® charterholder. In September 2019, I registered for the CFA Level 1 exam with the intention of writing in June 2020. However, COVID-19 led to the postponement of exams globally as you can imagine, and I had to defer my exam to May 2021 after moving to Cape Town for a new role. When I finally took the Level 1 exam in May 2021, the pass rate was only 25%, well below the historical average of 41%. It was the lowest pass rate ever for this exam at the time. In the following exams, the rates dropped even further. It was a tough time to be a candidate - it felt like the odds were against me. After passing Level 1, I started preparing for Level 2 in 2022. This part of my journey was really tough, and the difficulty of this level added to the stress. A month before my exam I experienced burnout, and despite my hard work, I unfortunately failed the exam. I’ll never forget the email that brought me this disappointing news. It was a hard moment, but as Confucius said, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” This setback taught me important lessons about resilience and made me more determined to come back stronger. Fast forward to 2024: I have earned my CFA charter and can finally call myself a CFA charterholder. This moment feels unreal —a true “pinch me” moment. After all the sacrifices and hard work — and many many moments of stress and exhaustion— it is done. There are many individuals who deserve recognition during my journey and whom I owe gratitude to. I am nothing without them and the amazing community that has supported me over the years. You all wanted to see me win, and as you have helped me, I hope you will do the same for others who follow. As I reflect on this journey, I want to leave you with one of my favorite quotes by Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Today it’s me. It ended in Yonelisa Petse, CFA CFA Institute
