About us

At the Sustainability Institute, we engage in transformative learning towards just and flourishing futures. Our various activities and programmes strive to realise sustainability through learning, exploring and applying ways of being that are restorative and generative. In 2024, we were recognised as the Most Transformative Learning & Social Innovation Organisation, South Africa by Corporate Vision Magazine. We inspire mindsets of plenty and possibility. Our focus on children is centred within the Lynedoch Children’s House, Lynedoch Community Primary School and Lynedoch Youth programmes. We design and create a learning experience that proves that a more just and generative African future is possible, thereby inspiring and equipping learners with skills, knowledge and attitude to activate change for sustainability within their own respective contexts. The Institute is recognised as one of the leading expert institutions in navigating the transition towards social justice and change in complex futures in Africa and forms an institutional base for some of the top academics in the field. • This year we are celebrating our 25th anniversary, and with this we step into the next chapter for the SI. It has been a year of reflection and reimagining what the SI as a space offers into the lives of everyone that spends time here, be it a few hours or many years. What we have realised is that the SI is more than a place - it's a living imaginarium where possibility takes root.    Read more about this, as well as our various programmes, happenings and offerings in our latest newsletter, which you can access by following this link: https://lnkd.in/dzxaAkMM

  • Consider supporting our campaign as part of your holiday season gifting, by giving the gift of education. Visit our GivenGain page to make a donation! https://lnkd.in/dMTrjh4r Quality education and academic support holds many advantages, some if which are highlighted by the Global Partnership organisation: - Education reduces poverty: If all students in low-income countries left school with basic reading skills, 171 million people could be lifted out of poverty. This is equal to a 12% cut in global poverty. - Education makes people healthier: A child whose mother can read is 50% more likely to live past the age of 5, 50% more likely to be immunised, and twice as likely to attend school. - Education promotes gender equality: One additional school year can increase a woman's earnings by 10% to 20%. - Education fosters peace: Literate people are more likely to participate in the democratic process and exercise their civil rights. - Education saves children’s lives: Educating girls averted more than 30 million deaths of children under 5. Every child deserves the #giftofeducation to have a #BrightFuture! Please help us to make this possible.

  • Today we are launching our #GiftOfEducation campaign, and ask that you please help us in raising R100 000 by 20 December! Consider supporting our campaign as part of your holiday season gifting, by giving the gift of education. Visit our GivenGain page to make a donation! https://lnkd.in/dMTrjh4r For so many of the children in the Lynedoch Community School, access to additional tutoring along with qualified teachers supporting our learners to be prepared for their high school years, are vital to ensure success at school. The gift of education is one that keeps on giving. It gives wings to dreams, and can never be taken away. It lays the foundation for a better future. The gift of education is one of the ways to break intergenerational cycles of poverty, which is our dream for the Lynedoch Valley. When you have an education, you have more choices in life, more opportunities and an increased chance of getting better paid work. When you support our campaign, we will be able to cover the costs for these additional tutors and bridging support, to help the children be ready for their next learning phases. #tutors #brightfutures #holidaygifting GivenGain

  • Food and nutrition insecurity during childhood remains a persistent threat to human development, casting a long shadow over a child’s life trajectory and contributing to intergenerational cycles of poverty, malnutrition and poor health. The Sustainability Institute in Lynedoch is actively tackling childhood malnutrition in the valley because a hungry child cannot focus on learning. That’s why our Children’s Feeding Programme is so vital to the educational support we offer. Every school day we provide meals to more than 100 children and youth, made possible through donor funding from the #JannieMoutonFoundation and ingredients received from the Peninsula School Feeding Association. https://lnkd.in/d9XGRSBp #foodsecurity #education #feedingourchildren

  • In community we are working together to bring about a thriving Lynedoch valley by nurturing the potential of its children and youth through comprehensive educational and support programmes that foster the capacity for collective imagination. It starts with instilling hope, and showing that a different future is possible if you want it.

Youth unemployment in South Africa is an ongoing crisis. The implications are not just economic; they impact the very fabric of our society. Recently, I had the privilege of hearing Kate Philip from the Presidential Employment Stimulus speak, and her words really struck a chord. When people can’t find work, the psychosocial impacts are devastating. Work is more than just survival—it's a key part of the social contract. When someone’s labour is seen as having no value, the message is that they, too, have no value. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Work has profound social value. Unemployment erodes hope, weakens communities, and deepens inequality. This week, we launched the first Youth Work Readiness programme at The Sustainability Institute. In partnership with Spier Wine Farm and Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, this initiative is for young people in our valley who are either searching for work or seeking career growth. Our aim? Not just to provide skills, but to rebuild confidence and help our youth see their potential. Together with our partners—Spier, Makwande Empowerment Trust (Simoné Benjamin-Carolissen), and Remgro Company Limited—we are committed to reducing youth unemployment to zero in our valley. We believe that meaningful work restores not only livelihoods but also self-worth. This isn’t just about finding jobs; it’s about restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity for every young person. #YouthUnemployment #EmploymentForAll #SocialImpact #YouthEmpowerment #WorkReadiness #YouthDevelopment #RegenerativeFutures #CommunityResilience #SouthAfricaYouth #WorkWithDignity #SocialEmploymentFund
