📊 Bridging the data divide through our Data Storytelling Workshop “The trainers were very attentive which made me feel comfortable during the training. As a trained statistician, it was important to learn about data communication and journalism. Most of our work is often just contained within our respective fields so this training emphasised the need to ensure that public facing information should be clear and easy to interpret by general citizens who may not be well versed in technical fields.” - Matome Mokganya This is exactly why we do what we do - helping experts bridge the gap between technical precision and public understanding. Because when data speaks clearly, everyone benefits. If you’re looking to make your work more accessible then start by subscribing to our FREE newsletter. Building the best data newsletter in the world. On a mission to mainstream data and visualisations.

One of our biggest achievements this year has been one that most people don't really know about: we launched and ran the first-ever pan-African Data Journalism Academy https://lnkd.in/ehRveQ26 A multi-country, ~6-month certificate course, our first cohort was made up of 11 working journalists from 6 countries across Africa, literally from North to South. We kicked off with a week in Johannesburg for the initial bootcamp followed by months of online work. We've had some of the best possible speakers and trainers during this time including Vukosi Marivate Camilla Bath Ken Kiunga Fredrick Mugira Kyle Cowan Jeff Wicks and many more It's been tough work and not without its challenges but we're nearing the end of the first cohort's work and looking forward to the second intake next year. It's been fun, and hard work. But don't take my word for it, take a look at what the class said, including Mischka Moosa Marecia Damons Damilola Ojetunde  @Hellen Kabahukya Some of the newsrooms represented in the first cohort include: Nation Media Group (Kenya), BBC Africa (Nigeria), GroundUp News (South Africa), TechCabal (Botswana), Solutions Now Africa (Uganda), Nigeria Health Watch (Nigeria), Standard Media Group (Kenya), Business Day (Nigeria), Media24 (South Africa), Good Governance Africa (South Africa), GreenRising (Zimbabwe) We haven't talked about the academy much because we've mostly been just working to offer the best course we can. But now as the end of the year is on us and we have a chance to reflect we can appreciate what we've achieved. We're a small team (~6 people) doing a ton of other work so managing the Data Journalism Academy has been no small feat. In particular Laura Grant and Gemma Ritchie have been outstanding in pulling everything together and navigating unforeseen challenges, the extensive bureaucracy while all the while teaching and assessing the class. This has been a massive undertaking that I'm particularly proud of.

We're closing out the The Outlier year with 657 charts published, more than 200 of them this year. Among them are these which are relevant if you're living in Gauteng where water shortages/shutdowns are becoming the norm. More on this: https://lnkd.in/dkQuYsmr Also, in this week's newsletter the Outlier team members chose some of their favourite charts of the year, which is way harder than you imagine when you've had a hand in making many of them.
