A milestone event held at the Dar es Salaam Serena Hotel in Tanzania on 30th November 2024 as PMAESA launched its commemorative PMAESA@50 Handbook during a gala dinner held on the sidelines of the 7th AAMA Conference and General Assembly. The gala dinner was graced by the presence of dignitaries from the government of the United Republic of Tanzania, PAPC principals, PMAESA Member representatives, development partners as well as continental and global institutions.

TNPA FEATURES AT PMAESA @50 CELEBRATIONS The Port Management Association of Eastern & Southern Africa (PMAESA) is celebrating its Golden Jubilee - 50 years of maritime excellence and transformation. As part of the celebrations, the organisation is hosting the Chairperson of PMAESA, Adv Modjadji Phyllis Difeto, who is the Acting Chief Executive at Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) to deliver a keynote address focusing on the strategic positioning of Sub-Saharan ports. She will deliberate on the unique role of African ports in the global shipping market, highlighting major capital investments needed to address capacity limitations. Additionally, she will discuss Blue Economy opportunities aimed at unlocking investment in the maritime value chain. The Jubilee event is set to take place on 30 November 2024 at Dar es Salaam Serena in Tanzania. It will also feature the official launch of the PMAESA @50 Handbook which highlights TNPA’s contribution and provides an overview of the strategic direction of the SA port system. She will also be attending the 7th General Assembly Conference of the Association of African Maritime Administrations taking place from 29th November to 1st December 2024. Since its establishment, PMAESA has hinged its contribution to improving port operations and addressing key constraints to ensure the efficient handling of imports and exports at its member ports. Today marks the 70th anniversary of one of South Africa's most recognisable sites, the uMhlanga Rocks Lighthouse. The iconic Lighthouse was first lit by Transnet National Ports Authority on the night of 25 November 1954. Transnet National Ports Authority Eastern Region Acting Managing Executive, Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, delivered a keynote address at the Norway Smart Ports Seminar, where she unpacked digitisation to optimize efficiency for South Africa’s ports. Reflecting on the progress made, she touched on the reinstatement of the Integrated Port Management System (IPMS) and the introduction of Smart Security Research & Development at selected ports. She highlighted initiatives such as Smart Metering and Traffic Management Systems which will enhance productivity for the transport value chain.

This week, Mpumi Dweba-Kwetana, the Acting Managing Executive for Transnet National Ports Authority's Eastern Region, participated in a panel discussion on “Unlocking KZN’s Economic Potential” at the Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal Conference. During the discussion, Mpumi shared valuable insights with delegates regarding key initiatives that have enhanced shipping operations in the region. These included a significant reduction of marine and pilotage delays as well as the arrival of five tugboats at the Durban Port. She also highlighted the progress made to reduce the number of trucks on the roads leading to the Port of Richards Bay, thanks to the collaboration with key industry players and Transnet Freight Rail's road-to-rail initiatives.
