Last week, UVU Bio was proud to contribute to solution-driven discussions, organised by the Rwanda Pharmaceutical Students Association (RPSA/AEPHAR) in collaboration with AMR Initiative Rwanda at the RPSA Scientific Conference at the University of Rwanda, Remera Campus, Kigali. A key highlight was Dr Anesu Conrad Moyo(Pr. Sci. Nat.)'s participation in a critical panel discussion with ALIDA NGWIJE, Associate Director, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., moderated by Marcel Ishimwe, on pandemic surveillance, early detection, and the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He emphasised the power of collaboration in tackling these global health challenges: "A One Health approach is essential in strengthening pandemic response. By uniting researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders, we enhance our ability to detect, prevent, and combat pandemics—including the silent pandemic of AMR—with resilience and efficiency." – Dr. Anesu At UVU Bio, we believe collaboration is key to building resilient healthcare systems and making biotechnology work effectively for Africa. #PandemicPreparedness #OneHealth #AMR #GlobalHealth #UVUBio #RPSASciCon25 Emmanuel Kwizera

7𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐞𝐛 2025: "𝐏𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐂 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐄" Is this topic too big to be discussed by/with students? 𝐍𝐎! Despite progress made since the West Africa Ebola crisis in 2014/15, GPMB’s 2020 report, A World in Disorder, highlighted how the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a collective failure to prioritize and seriously take action on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Various outbreaks including the recent #Marburg outbreak in #Rwanda, have also highlighted the urgent need for preparedness and collaboration across all healthcare fields. With the increasing unpredictability of future pandemics, including the silent threat of #AMR, what should be our role as pharmacists and future healthcare professionals? On February 7th, I had the opportunity to attend a scientific conference on #PandemicPreparedness, organized by the Rwanda Pharmaceutical Students Association (RPSA/AEPHAR), under the theme "Fostering Public-Private Partnerships to Establish a Resilient Healthcare Infrastructure in Rwanda." The conference focused on establishing cross-sectoral collaborations to enhance surveillance and early detection, raising public awareness, and fostering collaborative efforts to respond to pandemics. Dr Fernand Rwamwejo of the Ministry of Health, Republic of Rwanda also shared what Rwanda is doing and how it was able to stand firm against #Marburg. Dr Leandre Ishema M.D, MSc of the Rwanda Biomedical Centre also stressed the need for meaningful collaborations. Fostering Public-Private Partnerships for Pandemic Preparedness. On February 7th, I had the privilege of moderating a high-level discussion on pandemic preparedness under the theme "Fostering Public-Private Partnerships to Establish a Resilient Healthcare System," organized by Rwanda Pharmaceutical Students Association (RPSA/AEPHAR) . This conversation brought together key stakeholders in #Rwanda to explore how collaboration between public and private sectors can strengthen our healthcare system against future health threats. In recent years, Africa has faced multiple pandemic threats, from #Ebola and #COVID-19 to the recent #Marburg virus outbreak. These crises have exposed vulnerabilities in our health systems but have also highlighted the power of innovation, collaboration, and resilience. Strengthening surveillance and early detection through research and development is essential to prevent outbreaks before they escalate. Additionally, raising public awareness through education, communication, and medical product development ensures communities are informed and prepared to act swiftly. Beyond government efforts, multi-disciplinary collaboration is key to an effective pandemic response. We need scientists, policymakers, healthcare professionals, economists, and technology experts working together to develop innovative solutions as highlighted by Dr. Leandre Ishema M.D, MSc . Our discussions highlighted the importance of collective action, knowledge-sharing, and joint investments in building a robust, resilient healthcare system. Dr. Fernand Rwamwejo , our guest of honor from the Ministry of Health, emphasized the crucial role of partnerships in strengthening healthcare resilience. He also shed light on Rwanda’s proactive measures in combating the Marburg virus outbreak, showcasing the government's commitment to public health security through early detection, rapid response, and cross-sectoral collaboration. A huge thank you to our event sponsors for making this important dialogue possible UVU Bio UVU Africa University of Rwanda UNICEF Rwanda Biomedical Center Clinton Health Access Initiative for bringing this idea to life. To the youth and emerging health leaders—the future of healthcare depends on our engagement, innovation, and commitment to strengthening global health security. Today we are celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science by recognising the power of diverse voices in STEM and the impact women have in driving innovation and change. Despite progress in STEM, gender bias and limited access to resources and opportunities still create significant barriers for women and girls pursuing careers in these fields. At UVU Bio, we are committed to making space for women to thrive in science. We spoke to our scientists about their journeys, the challenges they’ve faced, and their hopes for the future of women in STEM. Their stories highlight the importance of representation, mentorship, and skills development in empowering the next generation. Through our training programmes, research opportunities, and community support, UVU Bio is helping bridge the gap and create a more inclusive future for women in science. #WomenInScience #STEM #Innovation #UVUBio #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInScience
