Inspired by the successful creation of monolithic open vane impellers, our team of visionary engineers, skilled machinists, and expert metallurgists set out to replicate their benefits in the more complex closed vane design. The goal? To enhance structural integrity and lifespan. Key achievements include: 🔹 Monolithic Construction: Transitioning from traditional welded designs to a single stainless steel billet, eliminating weaknesses and enhancing durability. 🔹 Collaborative Effort: Overcoming challenges, such as the impeller's size (over 850 mm in diameter), through teamwork and continuous innovation in tooling. 🔹 Material Selection: Choosing the ideal 1.4418 stainless steel for high strength and resistance to corrosion, ensuring superior performance in demanding environments.   • VCE was awarded a contract to manufacture a 1st stage closed vane impeller for a large multinational OEM. VCE could manufacture the impeller in half the time it would take the OEM’s manufacturing facility in Europe. The impeller is manufactured from a solid piece of material, providing several advantages over the previously welded construction. This was the most challenging impeller VCE has manufactured to date. The impeller has a diameter of 800mm. The closed vane passage necessitated that special tooling had to be designed and manufactured. The machining parameters also had to be optimized, as the specific grade of stainless steel used is especially difficult to machine. The grade of Stainless Steel used for this project is state-of-the-art, as it provides superior strength and corrosion-resistant properties when compared to the grades currently used. The material, in conjunction with the novel machining methods used, result in a superior product. It represents the next generation of impeller capable of operating more reliably and provides a long-term cost benefit to the end-user.
