According to Tim Atkin MW, the often overlooked talent of winemakers in large cooperatives deserves greater recognition due to their unique skill set in producing consistent wines at scale. ‘Blending large volumes of wine requires a unique skill set. Maybe someone like me should be giving more credit to those people,’ he says. We celebrate the impressive efforts of our large-scale Brand Partners including Darling Cellars and Robertson Winery. Fortified wines are gaining popularity in South Africa, with brands like Allesverloren , Groot Constantia, De Krans Wines and Muratie at the helm. Why? The bigger picture suggests the COVID19 pandemic saw South African drinkers reaching for the forgotten bottles left in the cupboard, and these were often fortified wines. A continued interest in the category shows wine lovers have remembered why they liked it so much, and perhaps developed a new appreciation for just how delicious these wines can be. The extreme heat of 2022 and heavy rains in 2023 posed challenges to South African vineyards, says Tim Atkin MW. He points out, however, that the impact varied by region, making it essential to assess vintages with greater nuance rather than broad generalisations. ‘You need to look within those regions and say... maybe the cooler regions were better,’ says Atkin.
