About us

Volkswagen of South Africa (Pty) Ltd, trading as Volkswagen Group Africa, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Aktiengessellschaft (VWAG) in Germany. Volkswagen Group Africa is located in Kariega, 35 km from Gqeberha within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole, and has become a major contributor to foreign direct investment, technology transfer and skills development. Established in 1946, the plant was initially called SAMAD (South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors) for the local assembly of Studebaker cars and commercial vehicles. The first Beetle rolled off the line in 1951 and heralded the beginning of the largest German investment in Southern Africa. Volkswagen Group Africa’s brands retain a consistently strong position in the South African passenger vehicle market. Its Kariega plant is the sole manufacturer of the Polo worldwide, exporting to 38 countries. For generations, Volkswagen Group Africa has led the pack in the key areas of transformation. The company has set key targets and measures its success, which is the reason it has such a proud record as a responsible corporate citizen. The company strongly believes that job creation and skills development will fuel Black Economic Empowerment. Its first priority, therefore, is to build a strong and successful business that protects and creates jobs within Volkswagen Group Africa and the broader Volkswagen family of suppliers and franchised Dealers. In addition to its South African operations, Volkswagen Group Africa is also responsible for the Sub-Saharan Africa region and North African markets. In terms of its production footprint, Volkswagen Group Africa currently has assembly facilities in Kenya (assembling Polo Vivo, T-Cross, Tiguan and Touareg), Rwanda (assembling Virtus, T-Cross, Caddy, Tiguan and Amarok), and Ghana (assembling T-Cross, Tiguan, Teramont and Amarok). The brand’s presence in Rwanda also includes mobility solutions services such as car sharing and ride hailing.

  • Seeking More: A journey of discovery with the Volkswagen Touareg As the Seek More with Touareg Retreat comes to an end, we reflect on an extraordinary experience - one that blended luxury, connection, and self-discovery. From the refined elegance of Legacy Hotels & Resorts' DaVinci Penthouse to the breathtaking landscapes of Tshukudu Lodge, this journey was about more than just the road - it was about seeking more in every moment. The Touareg carried us effortlessly from city streets to the heart of the wilderness, where we paused to breathe, reflect, and connect. A mindful journey unfolded - guided journaling, creative clay art, and a grounding breathwork session beneath the trees, with a rhino peacefully nearby. These moments of stillness reminded us that true luxury is not only about where we go but how we experience the journey. As the retreat closed with a sunset game drive, it was clear - seeking more is a mindset, a way of life. This experience may have ended, but the pursuit of extraordinary continues. A special thank you to our incredible guests for joining us on this unforgettable journey: 🔹 Lucas Radebe 🔹 Lerato Phago 🔹 Lebo Gunguluza 🔹 Siyanda Bani 🔹 Luke Mostert 🔹 Nonkululeko Buthelezi 🔹 Chad Jones #SeekMoreWithTouareg #VolkswagenTouareg #LegacyHotels #TshukuduLodge #TouaregRetreat #LuxuryTravel #ExtraordinaryJourneys

  • Today at VW Indaba 2025, we marked a significant chapter in Volkswagen Group Africa's journey. From celebrating the 15th anniversary of Polo Vivo in South Africa to unveiling our strategic roadmap for the future, this event was a testament to Volkswagen's continued commitment to Africa's growth. A key highlight was the introduction of the new Golf PA, Tayron, T-Cross, Crafter, Polo Xpress, Motorsport racing cars including Ducati motorbikes, setting new benchmarks in both performance and sustainability. As we discussed our plans for electric mobility, we reaffirmed our dedication to creating a greener, more connected future for Africa. At VW Indaba, we also heard from thought leaders including Martina Biene, Chairperson and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Africa, who shared her vision for Volkswagen’s role in driving positive change through innovation, sustainability, and local impact. Together, we look forward to embracing the challenges and opportunities of 2025 and beyond, working hand-in-hand with communities across the continent. #VWIndaba2025 #VolkswagenInAfrica
