August 2024 Spotlight on #AfCFTA The African Continental Free Trade Area (#AfCFTA) has continued to gain momentum as one of the most ambitious and transformative initiatives on the African continent. As of August 2024, key developments have unfolded that are shaping the future of trade, investment, and economic growth across Africa. Key Highlights: 1. Progress in Tariff Reduction: #AfCFTA member states have made significant strides in implementing tariff reductions, with over 40 countries now actively lowering tariffs on goods and services. This progress is expected to boost intra-African trade by making it easier and more cost-effective for businesses to operate across borders. 2. Digital Trade Expansion: The adoption of digital trade platforms under AfCFTA has accelerated, enabling more SMEs to participate in cross-border trade. These platforms are helping to reduce the cost of transactions, increase market access, and improve transparency in trade activities. 3. Focus on Infrastructure Development: Infrastructure development has been a key focus in August 2024, with several new projects launched to improve connectivity across the continent. The African Union, in collaboration with #AfCFTA, has announced a series of major road, rail, and port projects aimed at facilitating the movement of goods and services. 4. SME Empowerment Initiatives: Efforts to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been at the forefront of AfCFTA's agenda. Training programmes, financial support, and access to new markets are being provided to ensure that SMEs can fully benefit from the opportunities presented by the free trade area. 5. Spotlight on Agriculture and Agro-Processing: The agriculture and agro-processing sectors have seen a renewed focus under #AfCFTA, with initiatives aimed at boosting productivity, improving supply chains, and enhancing food security. These efforts are designed to leverage Africa's vast agricultural potential to meet both domestic and export demands. 6. Investment in Green Energy: The #AfCFTA Secretariat has placed a strong emphasis on sustainable development, particularly in the energy sector. August 2024 saw the launch of several green energy projects across the continent, supported by both private and public sector investments. These projects are not only aimed at meeting Africa's growing energy needs but also at reducing the continent's carbon footprint. .../continued in comments

As a firm that promotes training for diversity, equity, & inclusion professional, we want to share a fascinating story from Zambia that showcases the country's progressive strides in community representation. Zambia has once again demonstrated its openness and inclusivity, this time in the remote Ikelengi District in the North Western Province. Here, among the pineapple fields, we find the Lunda tribe, and their unique choice of a traditional leader. You see, in 2016, Peter Fisher, affectionately known as Chindeli cha ka Lunda, or the white Lunda chief, was crowned "Nyamwana." This title was bestowed upon him in honour of his family's long-standing support for the local community. Now, you might be wondering, how did a white man become a chief in a country where traditional leadership is typically passed down through specific family lineages? Well, it all started with Peter's Israeli parents, who made Zambia their home in what was then known as Northern Rhodesia. The Fisher family became well-respected members of the community, and when Peter's parents passed away, the late Chief Nyamwana, who had no son, reportedly adopted Peter and named him as his heir. Peter's coronation as a chief drew nearly all the Lunda chiefs from the surrounding districts, including Senior Chief Kanongesha, who oversees the area. And what makes this story even more fascinating is that Peter's children are fluent in the Lunda language! This tale has sparked diverse reactions online, with some praising Zambia's inclusive nature, while others express concern about the implications for local communities. As a diversity professional, do you see this as a testament to Zambia's commitment to embracing diversity and ensuring representation, even in the most traditional of settings? It reminds me of the case of Dr. Guy Scott, who became Zambia's interim president following the passing of President Michael Sata in 2014. Dr. Scott, who has Zambian and British heritage, faced similar questions about his identity and his right to lead. Yet, he proved that leadership is not bound by skin color or ethnicity but by one's ability to serve and represent their community. Zambia has once again challenged stereotypes and proven that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords but values they hold dear. As a global community, we can learn from Zambia's example, embracing our differences and ensuring that every voice is heard and represented, regardless of background or appearance. So, let's celebrate Zambia's progressive strides and continue to foster communities where everyone has the opportunity to lead and make a difference. #DiversityInLeadership #Inclusion What are your thoughts on this unique story? How can we continue to break down barriers and ensure inclusive leadership practices globally? Share your insights and let's keep the conversation going! https://lnkd.in/dx36UFgp
