Holders of Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEP), which were due to expire on Friday, 29 November 2024, have been granted a one-year extension, allowing them to stay in South Africa legally until 28 November 2025 without fear of arrest, deportation, or detention. This decision by the Minister of Home Affairs aligns with the order made by the Pretoria High Court for consultations on the future of ZEPs, ensuring temporary relief for affected individuals. While this extension provides a welcome reprieve, ZEP holders are advised to consider long-term visa solutions to maintain their legal status in South Africa. As featured in BusinessTech. Newsflash: Important Update on Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEP) The Minister of Home Affairs has issued Immigration Directive No. 15 of 2024, announcing an extension of the validity of Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEP) until 28 November 2025. This decision ensures a fair process to comply with the Gauteng High Court's directives and allows time for consultations with affected ZEP holders and stakeholders regarding the future of the exemption system. Key highlights of the directive: · All existing ZEPs will remain valid for the next 12 months. · ZEP holders cannot be detained, deported, or arrested for reasons related to the absence of a valid exemption certificate. · ZEP holders are allowed to enter and exit South Africa, provided they meet other immigration requirements, even if their visas are not endorsed in their passports. · ZEP holders are not required to produce valid exemption certificates during this period. This extension offers a crucial window for ZEP holders and stakeholders to engage in shaping a sustainable way forward. The Immigration Advisory Board (IAB) has been tasked with addressing the next steps, including compliance with court orders and stakeholder consultations.
