J-PAL Africa, based at the University of Cape Town, leads J-PAL’s work in sub-Saharan Africa. J-PAL Africa conducts randomized evaluations, builds partnerships for evidence-informed policymaking, and helps partners scale up effective programs. Our research team evaluates the impact of social programs and policies in South Africa, covering a wide range of sectors, including labor markets, urban services, and political participation. Our policy team works with African organizations and governments to build, pilot, and scale cost-effective interventions, including the Teaching at the Right Level approach to primary education. Our training team builds researcher capacity to conduct randomized evaluations and policymaker capacity to use evidence from randomized evaluations effectively.

A study by J-PAL affiliate Karen Macours demonstrates the positive impact of menstrual hygiene and stigma interventions on girls learning outcomes. 🎥 Watch this video to learn more about these study results: ⬇️
🇲🇬 Reducing the stigma of menstruation to improve girls' school learning outcomes in Madagascar: the first encouraging results of the Kilonga project The Kilonga project aims to improve basic hygiene and reduce the stigma around menstruation in schools. In May 2024, teams from CARE Madagascar, CARE France, and partner NGOs in Madagascar presented the project’s initial findings: 📈 Conducted across 140 schools, the evaluation assessed if reducing stigma and encouraging open discussions could improve girls' school attendance and engagement. ➡️ Results show a 13% improvement in girls' learning outcomes thanks to this approach. 📹 In this video, Hasina RAZAKARIVELONIRINA from CARE Madagascar and Karen Macours from Paris School of Economics present the results of the study:

Nehemiya is an undergraduate student in rural economics at the Catholic University of Bukavu. He completed a course on conducting experimental research offered by J-PAL Africa in collaboration with the Impact Evaluation Lab, ESRF TANZANIA and the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics. Nehemiya has a keen interest in economics, and plans to pursue graduate studies after his bachelor's degree.
