A U.S. Government-Led Partnership
About us
A U.S. government-led partnership, Power Africa harnesses the collective resources of public and private sectors to double access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. Power Africa’s goal is to add at least 30,000 megawatts (MW) of cleaner and more reliable electricity generation capacity and 60 million connections by 2030. Since 2013, Power Africa has delivered new or improved electricity to more than 200 million people across sub-Saharan Africa and connected nearly 42 million homes and businesses to on- and off-grid energy solutions. Through Power Africa assistance, 152 power projects reached financial close, representing nearly 14,300 megawatts (MW). Of these, 104 are now online and generating nearly 8,000 MW of cleaner and more reliable electricity, helping to mitigate climate change and end energy poverty on the continent. "Only a small fraction of electricity demand in sub-Saharan Africa is met through power markets, with most relying on bilateral trade. Competitive markets hold immense potential to deliver energy efficiently, at the lowest cost, and unconstrained by location." This insight from Samson Masebinu, PhD captures the essence of the discussions at #PIDAWeek2024, where Africa's energy, infrastructure, and regional integration priorities took center stage. Power Africa proudly participated alongside colleagues from other U.S. government agencies, reaffirming our commitment to regional energy integration through initiatives like the Continental Master Plan and the vision of the Africa Single Electricity Market. These priorities are critical to shaping Africa's energy future by driving cross-border power trade and sustainable development. From insightful panel discussions to bilateral meetings, we emphasized our dedication to expanding electricity access, fostering regional power trade, and strengthening partnerships with institutions like the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD, the African Development Bank Group, and the various power pools in Africa. As PIDA Week concludes, we look forward to building on this momentum with all our partners to achieve a brighter, more connected future for Africa. #AUDA #EnergyAccess #Africa #RegionalIntegration #PowerPools #PowerTrade #PowerAfrica Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) Veronica Lee Nardos Bekele-Thomas Amine IDRISS A.
