  • Sustainable, renewable energy is fundamental to Zambia's future. Transitioning #Zambia energy sectors to #renewableenergy holds vast potential to benefit national economies & job creation, & environmental quality. A comprehensive #policy package, such as a #GreenDeal, will support the country in transitioning the energy sectors. The specialisation in #Green Energy & Climate #Finance prepares one for leadership & specialist roles in the field of evaluating, financing, & steering of green #energy projects, extending & broadening knowledge in areas such as international #climatefinance, green project finance modelling, due diligence & company evaluation as well as performance measurement in the green energy sector. Existing frameworks and approaches to tackle climate finance such as the EU’s sustainable finance taxonomy tend to focus on mitigation financing investments that reduce global greenhouse emissions and transform the global economy into a green economy. These perspectives, while critical to solving some of the major challenges around climate change, do not address the impacts of #climatechange that are unavoidable and most severe for the people with the least capacity to cope. Globally, 1.7 billion people living in urban environments are affected by extreme #heat. In Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Togo, more than half of the coastline is already subject to rapid erosion. Three-quarters of smallholder #farmers in Zambia are vulnerable to climate shocks, including #droughts and flash floods. When climate events occur, it is the most vulnerable who suffer the most. Climate finance needs to work to reduce global #emissions, but it needs to work for these people, too. Women and #women-led households are heavily affected as well, as they are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change than men. In low-income countries, 63 percent of female employment is in #agriculture and women are highly dependent on natural resources for their #livelihoods. Compared to men, women have fewer #land rights, lower levels of financial inclusion, less involvement in #cash crops, lower participation in commercial agriculture, and are more likely to carry out unpaid #family work. Additionally, women are more affected by #health impacts associated with climate change, and more likely to die of climate-related disasters like #floods and storms. Women’s vulnerability to climate change is reinforced by #power relations and social #norms, and they have fewer #resources and tools to manage the impacts of climate change.   • 🚈 💎🔗https://lnkd.in/d4i74t7K The Mining or Mineral Supply Chain (MSC) development provides useful methodology for building MSCs at the #local, national & #regional (REC) levels in African #mining countries. These strategies & methods will assist African states to realise the significant mining industry backward #linkages opportunities & to use #mineral resources to drive #industrialisation, particularly for African countries with a high level of mineral dependence. “Procurement is typically the largest #payment a mine site will make in host countries usually more than #taxes#wages, and community #investment combined”, which underlines the crucial importance of maximising the localisation of the #supply chain whilst mining demand is still robust (before the resources are exhausted).  Consequently, given that minerals are by long way Africa’s biggest net #export can be argued that building the Africa’s mineral supply chains, in our countries, our regional economic #communities and across our continent, is the most important strategy within our mineral #policy. In addition to being the most the biggest payment in host countries, it the MSC has the possibility of outliving the mineral resources as well reinventing itself through lateral migration into #manufacturing products for other, sustainable, sectors. As we embark on the work of building our MSCs, it is important to bear in mind that the scope for MSC development within any one country will be limited, and the building of substantial and sustainable MSCs are critically dependent on accessing national, regional and continental markets. We must further emphasise that logistics are of the essence, and development of cost effective MSCs on a national, regional and continental level requires coordinated investment in #transport & cross‐border systems, or overseas imports shipped into our ports will continue to have lower #logistics costs to our mines, and be able to displace local MSC products. Consequently, even if your country does not have significant mining industry, it is part of an African Regional Economic Community (REC) & a continent where mining is the dominant generator of export receipts (#forex). Given the trend towards African regional economic integration through REC Free Trade Areas (FTAs), sometimes with Common External Tariffs (CETs), as well as the new African Continental FTA (ACFTA), there are increasing opportunities for building the Mineral Supply Chains (MSCs) through intra-African trade, even in member states with small mining industries. Historically, mining has not generally been a driver of sustainable growth, development and industrialisation, but rather an enclave activity, with weak linkages to the rest of our economy, and often a driver of conflict and misery.
