📢 Project Update: Solid Ground: Access to Land and Safe Homes Last week, we held a dissemination meeting to present the end-of-project evaluation findings for the Comic Relief-funded initiative, “Solid Ground: Access to Land and Safe Homes in Makululu, Kabwe.” This project, implemented from May 30, 2019, to November 30, 2024, by Habitat for Humanity Zambia in partnership with Bauleni United Sports Academy and Zambia Land Alliance, aimed to establish a "Safe place to live" by enhancing land tenure security and housing stability. 🏡 Project Highlights: • Mobilized and equipped the most vulnerable communities with essential knowledge on housing rights and financial savings strategies. • Enabled residents at risk of homelessness to acquire land occupancy licenses and build safe homes. • Developed skills for constructing secure community environments. 📊 Evaluation Insights: Habitat for Humanity Zambia conducted a comprehensive end-of-project evaluation, focusing on the project’s efficiency, effectiveness, relevance, and sustainability. The evaluation, carried out by an external consultant, aimed to: • Assess the project's effectiveness, relevance, efficiency, and sustainability. • Identify key challenges, lessons learned, and potential best practices for future programming. • Pinpoint potential areas for project sustainability and scalability. 💡 Key recommendations that have emerged include: 1. The need to regularly update project assumptions to remain relevant, as most beneficiaries used loans for income-generating activities rather than housing improvements. 2. The need to enhance the sports for change approach by integrating methodologies like study circles and Participatory Approach for Safe Shelter Awareness (PASSA) for a richer learning experience on critical topics. 3. The need to ensure feasible solutions in dialogue forums by considering the capacities and limitations of all stakeholders to make recommendations practical and implementable. This week, we conducted an in-depth monitoring visit for the "Community-Driven Models for WASH Improvement" project, currently being implemented in the Makululu community of Kabwe district. The project's main objective is to develop a resilient and healthier community by providing sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions by 2025. During our visit, we inspected several established projects under this initiative. Highlights included the nursery garden, which serves as a source of nutritious food and income generation, and also as an educational tool for community members on sustainable agriculture practices. We reviewed the newly constructed pour-flush toilets, aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene standards, thus reducing the occurrence of waterborne diseases. Additionally, we assessed the water infrastructure improvements, such as the installation of solar-powered boreholes in schools, ensuring that students have access to clean and safe drinking water. This monitoring visit was instrumental in evaluating the progress of these crucial projects and gathering insights to further enhance the initiative's impact, fostering a healthier and more sustainable environment for the community. The monitoring visit was conducted in partnership with Kabwe Municipal Council, Lukanga Water Supply and Sanitation Company, the Ministry of Agriculture, District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Office and community structures such as Ward Development Committee members and ward councillors. #SDG6 #WASHProject #CommunityDrivenChange #WaterSanitationHygiene #SafeWater #CleanSanitation #HealthierCommunities #SustainableDevelopment Habitat for Humanity Africa Habitat for Humanity International Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Kangwa Chamukwenu

This morning, Habitat for Humanity Zambia joined Zambia Land Alliance, and several other civil society organizations (CSOs) at the National Land Dialogue Forum, marking the official launch of the Zambia National Land Coalition. The Forum raised discussions centered around addressing the challenges of land governance and the best ways to collaborate to improve the land governance systems in the country. The National Land coalition is aimed at enhancing coordination and collaboration by bridging the gap between the government, private sector, Civil Society Organizations, Citizens, international agencies, traditional leaders and academia around issues of land governance. In his speech, Mr. Chrispin Chaebwa, the Director at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and Permanent Secretary Representative, reiterated the government's commitment to collaborate in promoting secure tenure rights, supporting community-led initiatives, and advocating for policy reforms that benefit all Zambians. Speaking during the same event, Habitat for Humanity Zambia National Director Ms Mathabo Makuta expressed excitement by the organisation’s opportunity of working alongside the Zambia National Land Coalition to advocate for land policies that will empower communities and ensure equitable access to land. Meanwhile, Chairperson for the National Land Coalition Mr. Emmanuel Tembo said the Coalition has a people centered focus that will prioritize the needs and well-being of Zambian citizens. He added that it is also gender responsive. Members of the Coalition include Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources Zambia, Habitat for Humanity Zambia, Zambia Land Alliance, Young Women in Action, Transparency International Zambia, Agriculture Consultative Forum, Integrated Land and Resource Governance, Medeem Inc., Civic Forum on Housing and Habitat Zambia, and Zambian Empowerment hub for Entreprenurship and Skills Training(ZEHEST). #LandGovernance #ZambiaLandCoalition #HabitatForHumanity #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEmpowerment #LandRights #Collaboration #SecureTenure #UrbanDevelopment

World Urban Forum 12: Scaling Climate-Resilient Housing and Exploring Urban Futures The World Urban Forum 12 (WUF12), organized by UN-Habitat, took place in Cairo, Egypt, from November 4 to 8, 2024, under the theme "It All Starts at Home: Local Actions for Sustainable Cities and Communities." This year, the forum brought together over 25,000 participants from 179 countries, including government officials, urban planners, and community leaders. The discussions highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions to address urban challenges, such as unaffordable housing and climate change, emphasizing the importance of localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of the Habitat for Humanity International delegation representing the Africa Region, Habitat for Humanity Zambia National Director, Ms. Mathabo Makuta had the opportunity to participate in two significant panel discussions focused on scaling access to climate-resilient housing in informal settlements and exploring urban futures through data, climate justice, and community co-production. The sessions were enlightening, showcasing successful innovations and discussing strategies for mobilizing stakeholders to accelerate climate-resilient housing initiatives in vulnerable urban areas. His Worship the Mayor of Kabwe was in attendance. He spoke alongside Ms. Makuta on the topic of "Transforming Urban Settlements" and had a meeting with Habitat for Humanity International CEO, Mr. Jonathan Reckfold. Furthermore, Mr. Reckfold had round-table discussions with key other partners such as the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, and the Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS), focusing on the effective partnerships with these institutions in Zambia. A representative from the Bank of Zambia also attended this round-table meeting with Mr. Reckfold. One key takeaway from the discussions is the critical role of innovative and inclusive housing policies in addressing the global housing crisis. With 2.8 billion people currently living in inadequate housing and over 1 billion lacking access to adequate shelter, it’s clear that immediate actions are vital. By collaborating with various stakeholders, we can drive change and ensure that housing solutions contribute to sustainable urban development while addressing the needs of the most vulnerable communities. #WUF12 #SustainableCities #ClimateResilientHousing #UrbanDevelopment #SDGs #InnovativeHousing #ClimateJustice #HousingForAll #UrbanFutures ‘Mathabo Makuta Grace Ananda Habitat for Humanity Africa United Nations UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) Habitat for Humanity International
