development and management of water resources, provision of clean water supply and adequate sanitation for all.
About us
The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation is responsible for developing and managing water resources, providing clean water supply, and adequate sanitation for all. Water is a finite resource like any other natural resource but is critical for the country's sustainable development. The mandate of the Ministry is to provide policy guidance in the water sector. WATER SECTOR OVERVIEW 1991 saw a change in the Government of the Republic of Zambia that introduced general public service reforms and the liberalisation of the economy. This created a conducive environment for water sector reforms. In order to implement the reforms, a guide was required for the entire process. Thus, seven sector principles outlined in the 1994 National Water Policy were adopted as a first step to the implementation of the water sector reforms

Ensuring Equity and Inclusion in WASH Services. Despite progress in Zambia’s water and sanitation sector, many women, girls, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities still face barriers in accessing essential services, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. The new WASH Equity and Inclusion Guideline provides a robust framework to address these gaps and ensure inclusive, equitable access for all. The government remains committed to achieving Vision 2030 and SDG 6, with a focus on leaving no one behind in the provision of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. #WASH #EquityAndInclusion #Zambia #WaterSecurity #SustainableDevelopment #Vision2030 #SDG6

Zambia's National Water Policy: Implementation Plan The revised National Water Policy (NWP) recognizes the vital role water plays in life sustenance, socio-economic development, and environmental preservation. By addressing challenges such as pollution, outdated systems, and uncoordinated water use, the policy aims to ensure sustainable water management and its contribution to poverty reduction. Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, MP, calls on all stakeholders to support the Implementation Plan, which outlines the steps, targets, and interventions to achieve Zambia’s water security goals. Together, we can build a water-secure Zambia! #WaterSecurity #SustainableDevelopment #NationalWaterPolicy #Zambia #WaterResources #ClimateResilience

A Milestone for Zambia's Water Future. Yesterday marked a historic step in securing Zambia’s water future as we officially launched the National Water Policy 2024, the Resource Mobilisation Strategy and Implementation Roadmap for the Zambia Water Investment Programme (ZIP) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP), and the WASH Equity and Inclusion Guideline. As Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu, MP, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, emphasized during the launch, water is the lifeblood of our nation—essential for our environment, economy, and the well-being of every Zambian. The newly launched National Water Policy provides a comprehensive framework to guide sustainable water resource management, promote climate resilience, and ensure universal access to clean water and sanitation by 2030. By mobilizing US$5.75 billion by 2030 for water investments and addressing the gaps in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services, this roadmap lays the foundation for a resilient, inclusive, and water-secure Zambia. We are deeply grateful to all our partners—African Development Bank, GIZ, UNICEF, WaterAid, and many others—whose tireless efforts and collaboration have made this possible. Together, let’s ensure that water security and equity are realized for the prosperity of Zambia and future generations. #WaterSecurity #Zambia #SustainableDevelopment #ClimateAction #WASH #Inclusion #2030Goals
