  • Press Release NewZambian Collaborates with UNDP Zambia to Hold the Antoomwe Exhibition at Agora in Lusaka Lusaka, Zambia – October 25, 2024 – NewZambian, in collaboration with UNDP Zambia, conducted the Antoomwe Art Exhibition at Agora in Lusaka. This exhibition aims to raise awareness about the pressing issues of climate change and environmental degradation through the powerful medium of art. A Crisis Unfolding The ongoing drought has sparked increased cases of human-wildlife conflict in Livingstone, leaving communities in fear for their lives and livelihoods. Elephants have been forced out of their usual habitat in search of food and water, causing devastation and terror among people and animals living in and around the Mosi Oa Tunya National Park. Antoomwe: The Exhibition The Antoomwe Exhibition is a platform to share stories of those living on the frontlines of this crisis and learn how to transition these communities from conflict to coexistence. When people and wildlife coexist, communities and ecosystems thrive. February 2024: A Month Like No Other This February, Zambia experienced its hottest and driest month since 1981. The relentless drought has affected an estimated 9.8 million people, with 2 million Zambians facing acute food insecurity. The crisis extends beyond human suffering, severely impacting wildlife by drying up watering points and depleting food sources. This scarcity has led to increased competition between humans and animals for basic resources, heightening human-wildlife conflicts in towns such as Livingstone. The Antoomwe Campaign In response to this crisis, UNDP Zambia has launched the Antoomwe Campaign, aimed at mitigating the effects of the drought and easing tensions between communities and wildlife. This initiative focuses on: Providing water points for wildlife within the Mosi oa Tunya National Park. Enhancing community livelihoods by offering alternative income sources, such as beekeeping, to affected community members. Educating local communities on the behavior of wild animals and the critical importance of conservation efforts. NewZambian’s Role NewZambian is currently implementing a project to use art to inform and educate the public on climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, with the support of United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Fund Small Grants Programme (UNDP GEF SGP and Hivos) with support from the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE). Join us at Agora in Lusaka to witness the transformative power of art and to support efforts to bring about coexistence between people and wildlife.
