We believe in justice, support & hope for the future for imprisoned juveniles

About us

UNDIKUMBUKIRE PROJECT ZAMBIA’S MISSION IS TO SUPPORT JUVENILES IN CONFLICT WITH THE LAW IN ZAMBIA THROUGH LEGAL REPRESENTATION, SOCIAL SUPPORT, AND ADVOCACY FOR A RESTORATIVE JUSTICE SYSTEM. TO ACHIEVE THIS, OUR WORK CENTERS ON FOUR AREAS: CASEWORK We believe that lawyers make the difference. UP organizes volunteer lawyers to represent juveniles in bail proceedings, at trial and confirmation to defend their rights, ensure that legal procedures are followed, and start the juvenile on a path to a restored future. ADVOCACY Our casework provides us with insight into the systemic roadblocks that prevent juveniles from receiving justice. These insights allow us to identify ways in which the system can be changed, working within the resource limitations faced by the Zambian courts, prison system and other stakeholders. We use the insights and data obtained through our casework to advocate for practical legal and policy reforms. PARTNERSHIP UP works with the Zambia Correctional Service, the Judiciary, the Legal Aid Board, and other public and private stakeholders, all of whom share the same goal: a justice system that better protects vulnerable juveniles. HOPE Incarcerated juveniles need more than a lawyer, they need hope for the future. UP seeks to provide juveniles with visitation, engagement, and meet their physical needs while they are in prison. In addition to social support during incarceration, UP recognizes the need for ongoing engagement with the juveniles upon release. Our desire is to develop partnerships with various organisations to offer rehabilitative counseling, mentorship, skills training, activities, and sponsorship.

  • As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, UP Zambia has been actively raising awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) and human trafficking, focusing on how these two issues intersect. Recently, we engaged the community at Chongwe Market and District Administration Office of Chongwe , educating people on what GBV and human trafficking are, and how to identify the signs. The Joint in Trafficking in Persons Project (JTIP) initiative is funded by the United States through the Department of State, in collaboration with the Zambian government, as part of the Comprehensive Bilateral Agreement to combat human trafficking in Zambia. Implementing partners include Save the Children Zambia, Undikumbukire Project Zambia (UP Zambia), and the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). #combathumantrafficking #upzambia #savethechildren #ywca #jtip#orangetheworld #towardbeijing+30unitetoendgbv

  • UP Zambia is actively participating in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which focuses on ending violence against women and girls. On 25th November 2024, we joined a walk officiated by the Permanent Secretary of the Gender Division, Mrs. Mainga D. Kabika, under the theme “Towards Beijing +30: Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls.” The same day marked the official launch of the 16 Days of Activism by His Excellency, the Republican President, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, at the Mulungushi International Conference Center. During his address, the President emphasized key measures to combat gender-based violence, including: 1. Strengthening partnerships to enhance the fight against GBV, 2. Improving protective mechanisms for whistleblowers, 3. Encouraging the reporting of GBV cases to authorities, and 4. Addressing the role of boys and men in combating GBV. As part of our efforts, UP Zambia is collaborating with other partners to implement the Joint Trafficking in Persons Project (JTIP) in Lusaka, Eastern, and Muchinga Provinces. This initiative addresses human trafficking, a form of gender-based violence where victims are exploited and subjected to abuse by traffickers who prey on their vulnerabilities and desperation. We welcome and fully support the priorities outlined by His Excellency, President Hichilema, as they align with our mission to combat human trafficking and gender-based violence in Zambia. Other notable dignitaries at the official launch were Mrs Nelly Mutti Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Permanent Secretary Gender Division, Non-Governmental Gender Organizations Coordinating Council, United Nations Resident Coordinator, Provincial Minister Lusaka Province, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission and cabinet ministers. The JTIP initiative is funded by the United States through the Department of State, in collaboration with the Zambian government, as part of the Comprehensive Bilateral Agreement to combat human trafficking in Zambia. Implementing partners include Save the Children Zambia, Undikumbukire Project Zambia (UP Zambia), and the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). #combathumantrafficking #upzambia #savethechildren #ywca #jtip#orangetheworld #towardbeijing+30unitetoendgbv

  • UP ZAMBIA CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH 94 CHILDREN. At Lusaka Remand Correctional Facility this past Saturday, October 26th, UP Zambia celebrated Zambia at 60 with a powerful Independence Day gathering, bringing the spirit of freedom and belonging to the children. In collaboration with the generous team at Freddy Hirsh Zambia, who provided the food, and G n N Smoke House, who prepared each meal with care, 94 children, including three girls from the Lusaka Central Female Correctional Facility were able to enjoy the special day. The event was filled with talent and expression as the children showcased their skills in singing, rap, and dance. They were joined by the correctional facility’s cultural and music club, consisting of detained adults and children, whose uplifting performances reminded them of the power of resilience and unity. In a heartfelt talk done by the cultural music club, the encouragement of the children was focused on decisions, determination, and destiny. Together, they reflected on how one’s current circumstances doesn’t define future potential of a person. Through the delicious food cooked with love and the warmth of a supportive community, the children felt seen, valued, and heard. They expressed their gratitude to UP Zambia for their ongoing presence and support, encouraging us to continue championing the rights and well-being of children. #ZambiaAt60 #ZambiaIndependenceDay #Childrights #2024

  • As UP Zambia commemorates Zambia’s 60th Independence Day, we reflect on the progress made in the child justice system in Zambia alongside our partners.  The enactment of the Children’s Code Act No12 of 2022 marks a significant step towards enhancing the welfare and seeks to address the vulnerabilities and challenges children face so that they can fully enjoy their rights. We look forward to a Zambia that continues to protect the welfare and the rights of children in conflict with the law. #ZambiaAt60 #IndependenceDay2024 #DiamondJubilee #UpZambia #ChildrensRights
