To better understand the drivers of the illegal pangolin trade in Zambia, WCP recently conducted an extensive baseline survey. Due to limited awareness of pangolins and their endangered status, it’s essential to gain insights into community attitudes toward these gentle, elusive animals and how we can protect them. Throughout the year, a dedicated team of 36 enumerators has been working in Lusaka, Solwezi, and Mungwi, conducting household surveys and interviews to gather valuable data. Thanks to the support of FQM Zambia and the Department of National Parks & Wildlife, we’ve connected with 1,437 community members to collect qualitative and quantitative insights. Yesterday, the WCP team spent the afternoon meeting with the Department of National Parks & Wildlife Director, Mr. Dominic Chiinda, along with the Veterinary Unit. During the session, WCP provided updates on this year’s progress and explored ways to further strengthen the partnership. WCP’s Pangolin Programme Manager, Suwilanji Sichone, recently attended the Southern African Regional Conservation Action Plan Workshop hosted by the IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group. This collaborative event brought together representatives from Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia to strengthen regional efforts for pangolin conservation. The workshop focused on creating a Southern Africa Regional Pangolin Conservation Action Plan, addressing key areas such as ex-situ & in-situ population management, climate change dynamics, and law enforcement strategies. Through group discussions and expert facilitation, each country contributed to solutions that align with the region's conservation priorities. The illegal wildlife trade threatens countless species, with poaching for bushmeat posing the greatest risk to Zambia’s wildlife. Our ‘This Is Not A Game’ campaign was launched to tackle this issue and reduce the demand for illegal bushmeat. To strengthen anti-poaching efforts, WCP’s Data & Operations Coordinator, Remmy Kopeka recently attended a CITES training workshop focused on demand reduction strategies for Africa. On 26 September 2024, a female Temminck's Ground Pangolin, weighing 9.6 kg was safely returned to the wild after being rescued from poachers by the Department of National Parks & Wildlife (DNPW) in Mumbwa. Initially, the pangolin emitted a scent resembling rotting flesh, prompting DNPW to swiftly hand her over to the DNPW-WCP Rehabilitation Centre for veterinary care. Within just a week, she made remarkable progress and was deemed fit for release. As a nocturnal creature, she was reintroduced to the wild after dusk. At first, she remained still at the release site but soon ventured deeper into the bush as night fully set in.
