  • 🌍World Refugee Day: Climate Change and Migration🌍 Each year, an average of 21.5 million people are forcibly displaced by weather-related events such as floods, wildfires, cyclones, and extreme weather temperatures. Climate migration is expected to surge in the coming decades, with approximately 1.2 billion people being displaced globally by 2050 due to climate change and natural disasters. Zimbabwe is currently experiencing severe drought conditions, compromising most crops of the 2024 farming season and threatening millions with hunger. These harsh conditions have forced some to migrate within the country and abroad, in search of sufficient rainfall, rich soils, and good pastures for livestock. World Refugee Day is celebrated annually to highlight the rights, needs, and dreams of those forced to flee their homes. Today, let's stand in solidarity with refugees by: 🔹 Supporting young refugees in pursuing higher education through sponsorships 🔹 Backing programs that slow the effects of climate change 🔹 Learning about the relationship between climate change and poverty 🔹 Reducing our carbon footprint 🔹 Donating to emergency appeals 🔹 Together, we can make a difference. #ClimateChange #WorldRefugeeDay #Refugees #20June #Climatemigration

  • 🌍 Each year, approximately 100 million hectares of land become degraded. Engaging the present and future generations is of great importance to halt and reverse these alarming trends and meet the global commitment to restore 1 billion hectares of land by 2030. This year, the theme of Desertification and Drought Day, “United for Land: Our Legacy. Our Future,” seeks to mobilize all parts of society in support of sustainable land stewardship. Healthy land not only provides us with 95% of our food but it also clothes and shelters us, provides jobs and livelihoods, and protects us from worsening droughts, floods, and wildfires. Growing world populations, coupled with unsustainable production and consumption patterns, fuel demand for natural resources, putting excessive pressure on land to the point of degradation. All these put tens of millions of people each year at risk of displacement. Therefore, it is crucial that we all take part in restoring our land to create a better future for us all. How can we contribute to this common goal? Making agriculture sustainable Protecting pollinators Planting more trees Restoring freshwater ecosystems Implementing effective water management Let us all be champions for change and help make our dear Earth a better place. ☘ #17June #CombatDesertificationandDrought #Sustainability #LandRestoration #ForNature

  • As we celebrate World Blood Donor Day 2024 with the theme “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you blood donors”, let’s take a moment to reflect on the incredible gift the blood donors give. This event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to show appreciation to voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. It is also a reminder that blood donation is a community responsibility we can all play a part in building a healthier, more compassionate world. World Blood Donor Day also highlights the importance of global cooperation in achieving health goals. By working together to promote voluntary blood donation, share the best practices, and support developing countries in strengthening their blood services, we can move closer to a world where no one dies to a lack of safe blood. So, to all the blood donors out there, past, present, and future: thank you. Thank you for your courage, your compassion, and your life-saving dedication. You may not wear capes, but you are the true superheroes among us. Every drop counts, so to everyone else, let’s use this day as a reminder to roll up our sleeves and give the gift of life. #WorldBloodDonorDay #14June #ThankYouBloodDonors#EveryDropCounts #SaveALife#20Years

  • This year’s theme “Be part of the Plan” is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the Biodiversity Plan. The Biodiversity Plan offers opportunities for cooperation and partnerships among diverse actors. Governments, indigenous people and local communities, non-governmental organisations, lawmakers, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to highlight the ways in which they are supporting the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan. Everyone has a role to play and therefore can Be Part of the Plan. What is biological diversity? It is the variety of life on Earth at all its levels, from genes to ecosystems and can encompass the evolutionary, ecological, and cultural processes that sustain life. Biological diversity resources are the pillars upon which we build civilizations. Over 80 percent of the human diet is provided by plants and as many as 80 percent of people living in rural areas in developing countries rely on traditional plant-based medicines for basic healthcare. Therefore loss of biodiversity threatens us all, including our health. We can all make a difference by: Recycling Investing in ways to promote biodiversity Supporting political action committed to protecting and restoring biodiversity Supporting local and regional; projects aimed at tackling biodiversity Educating the young generation about biodiversity, ecosystems and the threats they face and the opportunities to restore them #BiodiversityDay #PartofthePlan #ForNature #22May #Biodiversity #BuildBackBiodiversity #AgreementToAction #KMGBF #HarmonyWithNature #ForNature #ActionDecade #post2020

  • In recognition of the vital role that the youth can play in addressing challenges bees and other pollinators are facing, World Bee Day 2024 is focusing on the theme ''Bee Engaged with Youth.'' The theme spotlights the significance of involving youth in beekeeping and pollinator conservation efforts, acknowledging them as the future stewards of our environment. The aim is to raise awareness amongst young people and other stakeholders about the essential role of bees and other pollinators in agriculture, ecological balance, and biodiversity preservation. By engaging the youth in educational initiatives, advocacy efforts and beekeeping activities, we can motivate a new generation of environmental leaders and empower them to make a positive impact on the world. As the young generation, how can we do more? Buy raw honey from local farmers, protecting wild bee colonies from wild fires, raising awareness and sharing information about pollinator conservation within our networks and communities, purchasing of products from sustainable agricultural practices, and minimise the use of pesticides, fungicides or herbicides in gardens. Saving bees is saving our planet, therefore we must protect them and keep them safe to make our planet a better and safer place. #WorldBeeDay #SaveTheBees #beeday #bee #worldbeeday #bees #nature #flowers #beeparty #pollinators #honey #bumblebee #beekeeping

  • As we celebrate this year’s World Migratory Bird Day, it is of great importance to take action to educate and promote the conservation of migratory birds. This year’s theme highlights the relationship between migratory birds and insects amidst the alarming decline in both species. Insects are the essential energy source for many migratory bird species during the breeding seasons and their extensive journeys. Insects significantly affect the duration, timing as well as the success of bird migrations. Hence, loss of insects has severe impact on bird survival. The loss and interference of insect populations at breeding locations and along avian migration routes threatens the survival and well-being of migratory birds. The scarcity of protein and energy-rich insects hinders bird migration and breeding and weakens immune systems resulting in reduced reproductive success and increased mortality rates for birds and their offspring. Therefore, it is of great importance to take proactive measures towards the conservation of migratory birds. These measures include: - Reduction in the use of pesticides and fertilizers - Switching to organic farming - Maintenance of natural vegetation in agricultural landscapes

  • Each year, 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste is produced by humankind, advancing the destruction of our planet. It is time to address unsustainable production and consumption practices to beat waste pollution. Here are a few ways to #beatwastepollution: The local government must legislate the limitation of unnecessary production and consumption, as well as promote recycling and waste reduction initiatives. Businesses must remodel products to make them durable, reusable, and recyclable whilst reducing production intensity. Individuals can reduce, reuse, recycle, and upcycle items as well as urging the government to support waste management through campaigns and messages. Let us all be part of the solution to save our planet and #beatwastepollution

"Plastic or paper packaging. The more environmentally friendly option seems obvious, right? But concealed within this deceptively simple choice between two materials is a whole lot of different chemicals, marketing tricks and greenwashing. So, which is better for the environment?" - the Living Planet 15-minute podcast interviews Llorenç Milà i Canals, Head of Secretariat of the Life Cycle Initiative to discuss this interesting question. https://lnkd.in/eiwCDZxE

  • Women and Climate Change Climate change acts as a threat multiplier, finding existing injustices and amplifying them. When extreme weather devastates a community, gender inequalities worsen Intimate partner violence spikes, girls are pulled from school to save money, daughters are married early, and women and girls forced from their homes face a higher risk of sexual exploitation and trafficking. In many rural communities, the weather has a large impact on subsistence farming which makes up most people's livelihoods. Families struggling to cope with extreme weather sometimes turn to their children to help or to earn extra money to support the family. For every additional year, the average girl attends school, her country’s resilience to climate disasters can be expected to improve by 3.2 points on an index that measures vulnerability to climate change. One of the most pernicious ways the climate crisis can worsen gender inequality is by increasing the risk of sexual abuse and human trafficking. The climate crisis destroys livelihoods, throws people into poverty, and forces them away from their homes and communities — and for women and girls, it exacerbates their vulnerability to sexual exploitation. Abusers and traffickers are more able to target women and girls who find themselves in unfamiliar towns or are forced into densely populated camps and shelters, crowded with strangers. Pregnant women have a unique vulnerability to climate change — especially extreme heat. A mounting body of evidence has revealed links between heat waves and a slew of maternal health problems, including premature births, stillbirths and low birth weights. For every 1 degree Celsius of temperature increase, the number of stillbirths and premature deliveries rises by about 5%. As the impacts of extreme weather push people further into poverty, and families become desperate to relieve some financial strain, the nonprofit says the risks of child marriage increase. Twelve million girls are married before the age of 18 each year globally. That is 23 girls every minute. In less than a year Kenya has transitioned from a catastrophic multi-year drought to deadly flooding. In a country where 75% of people rely on farming as their main source of income. The extreme weather has triggered acute food insecurity and displacement. It’s also increasing the risk of gender-based violence, multiple studies have found. While the drivers of violence against women and girls are complex and multi-faceted, experts are clear that climate change amplifies the risks. Stress from loss of income can aggravate intimate partner violence and during times of disaster, women may also be coerced into sexual exploitation in exchange for necessities or be forced to trek long distances to fetch food and water, putting them at greater risk of violence. So as we celebrate women's day let's protect them with climate proofing. #womensday2024 #climatechange #vulnerablegroups #actnow
