We’re excited to share insights from our Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) Annual Report on how VSLAs are driving change beyond financial inclusion. Women in CARE’s savings groups are 40% more food secure, 75% more resilient, 15% more politically active, and 80% more likely to invest in their children’s education! In Zimbabwe, in FY24 we registered 8,837 new VSLAs members making the total of people participating in our projects 32,628. Cumulatively over the years our VSLAs footprint has reached 372,594 individuals. Through #VSLAs we are unlocking opportunities for unbanked women in Zimbabwe. "Today, we are here to hand over all the community assets in Chivi and Zaka Districts. These assets include four dams, 44 solarized boreholes, and 44 productive gardens. The community engagement in the project from its inception through completion has created a lasting impact that will extend well beyond the project's duration. The handover today is a celebration of the community's self-reliance and full ownership of these assets,'' said the US Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Pamela Tremont during the #AssetHandover event held today at Rubweruchena Solar-Powered Borehole and Garden in Chivi Rural District. The garden is one of the 44 assets established by the USAID funded project in two districts of Masvingo Province (Chivi and Zaka). #AssetHandover

In dry rural Zaka, Mabwende-Tsvazvivi Weir & Garden established by USAID Takunda in 2023 assists 83 garden members with a source of #livelihood and #food for consumption in this #drought season. Aletah Zimbeva (29) a mother of two says her life has improved since she started selling garden produce such as cabbages, covo, spinach, green pepper, onions, and okra. Since March 2024, she has managed to raise US$240 and has started a poultry project, currently, she has 40 chickens that she is rearing. “I am now self-sufficient, and I have started constructing a two-bedroomed cottage with a verandah thanks to some funds from this garden,’’ shared a jovial Aletah. With this level of sales, the 84 garden farmers will recover the project cost in 1-2 years. Mabwende-Tsvazvivi is one of 100 established out of a targeted 122 gardens across Buhera, Chivi, Mutare, and Zaka Rural Districts. The established gardens have managed to reach a total of 22 500 direct participants.
