Istanbul (Turkish spelling: İstanbul) is the biggest city in Turkey. Until 1930s this city was known in Western Europe, North America, and in literature in Western European languages by the name Constantinople; some writings named the inner city Stamboul, especially in the 19th century. In Classical Antiquity, the city was known as Byzantium or Byzantion.
