In a 2018 interview with Bandwagon TV, band member Michael Clifford expressed his excitement for the song’s release, saying:

I’m most excited for fans to hear the song “Ghost of You”. I think it will really resonate with our fan base and I think it’s going to become a song that will be very important to our career It’s really different from anything we’ve ever done … and I think they’re going to love it.

In the 2018 video Cocktail Chats // Ep.7 released on their YouTube channel, they explained:

Michael:

The first time I heard this song, I put it on and, by the end of it, I realized that it was my favorite song on the album. I’ve cried to it many times. It’s gonna be one of those songs that our fans are just gonna fall in love with and I just cannot wait to sing this song live. Having people sing this song back at us is gonna be so, so special, and I think that it’s gonna mean something different to each person.

Luke:

One of my favorites, it’s a slow song. We decided to end it on this note, I think it was very important for us to do that. Fun fact – for me, the first inspiration was the show This is Us. The man puts out a meal and pretends to dance with his now dead wife, and I think it’s beautiful, he does that everyday.

Calum:

This is the last song on the record, just because I feel like, when you’re writing songs, it’s either a question or an answer, and this song is defiantly a question, and to leave this as the last song on the album is an unanswered question, which leaved people kind of on the edge of the seats, which is our intention, as to where this band is gonna go for the next chapter of their career.

Ashton:

“Ghost Of You” is the finale of Youngblood. I really like the lyric twist “that my feet don’t dance like they did with you”, it’s very country writing, in a way.

Drummer Ashton Irwin has also tweeted his thoughts on this song. He wrote:

Ghost of you reminds me that when someone loves you. It is a gift, that can heal & rebirth a tired soul. Ghost of You reminds me to never take love for granted again. The lessons we have learnt are in our songs if you listen close enough.

In their Cocktail Chats // Ep.7, Michael explained that “Ghost of You” was this favourite song of the album and added that it has made him cry many times.
