Everybody’s Talkin’ Lyrics

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1]
Everybody's talkin' at me
I don't hear a word they're sayin'
Only the echoes of my mind
People stoppin', starin'
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes

[Chorus]
I'm going where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pourin' rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin' off of the northeast winds
Sailin' on a summer breeze
And skippin' over the ocean like a stone

[Bridge]
Wah, wah-wah-wah-wah
Wah-wah-wah-wah, wah-wah-wah
Wah

[Chorus]
I'm going where the sun keeps shinin'
Through the pourin' rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Bankin' off of the northeast winds
Sailin' on a summer breeze
And skippin' over the ocean like a stone
[Verse 2]
Everybody's talkin' at me
Can't hear a word they're sayin'
Only the echoes of my mind

[Outro]
I won't let you leave my love behind
No I won't let you leave
Wah-wah, ah
I won't let you leave my love behind
I won't let you leave...

About

Genius Annotation

“Everybody’s Talkin' ” is a song written by Fred Neil in 1966 and later sung by Harry Nilsson as the title song for the 1969 film Midnight Cowboy. The movie’s theme was originally intended to be Bob Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay”, however the song wasn’t submitted in time to make the movie’s final production.

The song had parallels to Neil’s later life—like the hero of Midnight Cowboy, he looked “for fame to match his talents, discover[ed] that success in his profession isn’t all it’s cracked up to be” and wanted to retreat. Five years after the song’s release, Neil permanently fulfilled the promise of the speaker in the song, rejecting fame to live the rest of his life in relative obscurity.

Nilsson’s version won a Grammy, however.
