Okie from Muskogee Lyrics
[Verse 1]
We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee
We don't take our trips on LSD
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street
'Cause we like living right, and being free
[Verse 2]
We don't make a party out of loving
But we like holding hands and pitching woo
We don't let our hair go long and shaggy
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do
[Chorus]
And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
And white lightning's still the biggest thrill of all
[Verse 3]
Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen
And football's still the roughest thing on campus
And the kids here still respect the college dean
[Chorus]
And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse
And white lightning's still the biggest thrill of all
And white lightning's still the biggest thrill of all

About
Genius Annotation
Merle Haggard’s famous look at reactionary attitudes towards the 1960’s counterculture. Its rather paternalistic attitude towards things led to a rebuttal by country artist Kinky Friedman, in his song “Asshole from El Paso”. Both songs have become country standards in their own right.
Haggard explained the song’s meaning in a recent interview:
During Vietnam, there were all kinds of protests. Here were these [servicemen] going over there and dying for a cause…And here are these young kids, that were free, bitching about it. There’s something wrong with that and with [disparaging] those poor guys…I wrote the song to support those soldiers.
