Downer Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Portray sincerity
Act out of loyalty
Defend your free country
Wish away, pain
Hand out lobotomies
To save little families
Surrealistic fantasy
Bland, boring, plain!
[Pre-Chorus]
Holy now is restitution
Living out your date of fusion
Is our whole fleece shun in bastard?
Don't feel guilty, master writing
[Chorus]
Somebody said that they're not much like I am, I know I can
Make enough of the words
You go along and I sing your song
[Verse 2]
Sickening pessimist hypocrite master
Conservative Communist apocalyptic bastard
Thank you dear God for putting me on this Earth
I feel very privileged in debt for my thirst!
Portray sincerity
Act out of loyalty
Defend your free country
Wish away, pain
Hand out lobotomies
To save little families
Surrealistic fantasy
Bland, boring, plain!
[Pre-Chorus]
Holy now is restitution

About
Genius Annotation
Kurt said about this song:
I was trying to be Mr. Black Flag punk-rock guy… I didn’t know what I was talking about.
“Downer” is actually the only song to emerge from his Fecal Matter demo to an official Nirvana album, twice. Once on Bleach and the second time on Incesticide. The Bleach one was recorded by Kurt on guitar and vocals and Dale Crover (Melvins) on drums and bass. Crover later re-recorded the drums, and that’s the version that ended up on Incesticide. The song is a remnant of Kurt’s immersion in hardcore punk and his pre-Nirvana, 1985 Fecal Matter days.
