american dream serves as Atlanta native 21 Savage’s highly-anticipated third studio album, following 2018’s i am > i was. It was promoted as a soundtrack for his alleged debut film, american dream: the 21 savage story, which was a promotional parody.
On February 20, 2019, Savage was arrested by ICE authorities in Atlanta for having a visa that expired in July 2006. Savage never previously mentioned his English origins publicly, and aptly does so throughout american dream.
The album was initially teased by Drake during an It’s All a Blur Tour stop on July 25, 2023, where he stated that he and 21 were working on their own projects, not long after they released their joint album, Her Loss.
On October 7, 2023, Savage’s lawyer, Charles Kuck, said in a statement that the rapper had been cleared to travel overseas following his 2019 arrest.
Months later, in December 2023, billboards began appearing in Savage’s home city of Atlanta. They donned an alternatively colored, 21-starred American flag, alluding to the album’s title. The following month, Savage announced the album’s release alongside the spoof trailer debuting “all of me.”
In the days following the trailer’s release, 21 Savage revealed the album’s features by uploading the artists' baby pictures to his Instagram.
