Weld (Live)

Neil Young & Crazy Horse

About “Weld (Live)”

Weld is one of the raged albums that I know of.
It has as a theme to show that not everything is as it seems to be.
This fits to the presentation that appears like it is ‘just’ a live album from the Ragged Glory studio Album. But ‘just’ hardly fits the description as every little change to the songs is meant in that way. The overall rough and distorted sound from “Ragged Glory” is transferred to the added songs so that even Blowin' In The Wind from Bob Dylan which is a natural calm songs sounds here like a horror trip.

The songs interact with each other where one asks questions and the other deliver answers.
The group acts sometimes also as actors where they sing as a chorus to represent the society, or they are a second layer to the protagonist and then, thy are just a one of a kind with him.

With all of this this, the songs tray to picture a parallel world where the rules a different from what we see and where the people are forced to stay in they classes, abused, with the hope to escape the class system by claiming up but which is actually a fake option as everyone stays where he belongs. This world has a karmic character where the protagonists are forced to relive moments. In some, the moments change to the better, in others to the worse.

But as Blowin' In The Wind is played far more aggressive, nothing here is blown! Everything happens by conscience and the anger over everything is frightening! – If there were not the first and the last song which builds a frame around the album.

Here the listener is confronted with a Jewish like humor, you think he is beaten but actually he plays with words and most likely just thinks about the next song he will write for his ‘road of life’ to play it later in some red light district bar.
It is good to don’t think about the ‘Welt’ all the time but you should never forget about it.
