I’ll Be Your Girl is the 8th studio album released by The Decemberists, and their first album since 2015’s What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. It was released on March 16th, 2018 through Capitol Records.
I’ll Be Your Girl is notable for its experimentation with styles of music and instrumentation that the Decemberists hadn’t previously used. The use of synths and other electronic elements sets certain songs like “For Once In My Life”, “Severed”, and “Your Ghost” apart as tonally unique in the Decemberists canon.
The album was announced on January 17, 2018 with the release of the first official single “Severed” and the schedule for a US tour. Many of the record’s songs, had been performed live previously. The album was featured on NPR Music’s First Listen on March 12, 2018.
The album is produced by John Congleton. While Congleton had never previously worked with The Decemberists, he had worked with many popular and critically-acclaimed alternative and folk acts in the past, including Future Islands, Angel Olsen, David Byrne, Swans, and St. Vincent.
From a statement released on the band’s website:
“When you’ve been a band for 17 years, inevitably there are habits you fall into, so our ambition this time was really just to get out of our comfort zone. That’s what prompted working with a different producer and using a different studio. We wanted to free ourselves from old patterns and give ourselves permission to try something different.”
