Ind vs Aus 5th Test: Indian pacers to face an uphill task as batsmen crumble for 185 in first innings

    Synopsis

India’s batting lineup crumbled once more as they were bowled out for a low first innings total of 185 in the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Key players including KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli were dismissed cheaply, and despite a fight from Rishabh Pant, India's hopes faltered under fierce Australian bowling.

Crippled. That's how Australia has left India's confidence and it's batting line-up, which has collapsed yet again. The Indian men have been bowled out for a mere 185 in the first innings of the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday.

When Jasprit Bumrah walked out for toss for the Border Gavaskar Trophy finale, anticipations to captaincy were put to rest and hope for a better outcome beamed in whole of India's eyes at 4.30 AM IST, at least for something better than what happened in Melbourne.

Rohit Sharma 'opted to rest'. Meanwhile, Bumrah chose to bat on the day when the pitch looked like it could offer good seam movement. It was only a matter of time when India's current best pacer would've regretted his decision. KL Rahul, who opened with Jaiswal today, was the first to walk to the pavilion having scored a mere 4 (14), giving Australia and Mitchell Starc just the perfect start. Not much later, Jaiswal fell prey Boland and edged in the eighth over, with the ball landing in debutant Webster's hands.

Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli sailed India's boat through the bumpy first session, before the 25-year-old batsman lost his wicket on the stroke of lunch. Soon after lunch, India lost their fourth man with Kohli giving his wicket cheaply yet again to outside off stump, similar to almost all the times he's gotten out in this series.

With new batsmen, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja, India needed a long partnership. But this, too, was not enough as the middle-order duo could only make 48 (151). Rishabh Pant (32) and Ravindra Jadeja (11) were fighting to recover when tea was taken before Pant's patience and an innings against his 'natural game' came to an end with courtesy of Scott Boland.

The amount of blows he took today in his 98-ball-inning, a part of complete destruction by Aussie seamers, is commendable, perhaps not enough to take the team to a respectable total on the first day of the do or die game.

Jadeja and hero of the last game Nitish Kumar Reddy were sent back to the dug out as Starc and Boland delivered masterfully. While Washington Sundar looked like India's last hope, it was short-lived as the delivery by Pat Cummins in the 66th over, touched an edge of gloves and ball landing in Alex Carey's gloves. A perfect review by Aussies, amplifying their dominance on India in this series.

Skipper Bumrah played some fiery shots to add 22 runs to India's tally towards the end and ending the innings at 185.

Brief scores: India 185 all out in 72.2 overs (Rishabh Pant 40 batting, Ravindra Jadeja 26; Scott Boland 4/31).
